The protagonist of Final Fantasy IV, Cecil is the commander of the Red Wings, Baron's elite air force that was created with the invention of the Airship. After asking the king a question to satisfy his own curiosity, Cecil was stripped of his position and was sent on a mere delivery task that soon helped him to make up his mind to fight against the mightiest kingdom in the land.

Cid Pollendina is a playable character in the game Final Fantasy IV. He is a master engineer, and he designs the airships that make up the Red Wings in Baron. He is thus an old acquaintance of Cecil Harvey, and is adventurous and fun-loving, despite the fact that he is over fifty years old. He has a firm belief in right and wrong as well. He has a daughter who lives with him in the town of Baron, and she often scolds him when he comes home late from work. He is also very lazy, and has a tendency to snore very loudly. Cid is first seen in Baron after Cecil is discharged from his post as captain of the Red Wings. He heard the bad news, and apologizes to Cecil. However, he has to rush home before his daughter scolds him. He is next seen sleeping in his bed in the town of Baron. At this time, he is also working on a new prototype airship, the Enterprise. However, he notices that the king is not acting like his normal self and is performing many evil deeds. As a result, Cid hides the Enterprise and refuses to show it to the king. He is thus imprisoned for treason. Cecil, Tellah, Yang Fang Leiden, Palom, and Porom have to free Cid by defeating the king, who turns out to be Caignazzo, the Fiend of Water. After Caignazzo is defeated, Cid is free and runs to meet Cecil, and then joins his party after he learns about what happened to Rosa Farrell.

Edge Geraldine is a player character in the game Final Fantasy IV. He is the prince of Eblan and a skilled Ninja. He is very brash and has an inflated ego, and flirts with women quite often. However, he is kind and has a strong sense of right and wrong, and defends his kingdom no matter what the price. Edge is first seen battling Rubicante, the Fiend of fire, in Cave Eblana. He is easily defeated by Rubicante. Cecil Harvey, Kain Highwind, Rosa Farrell, and Rydia witness this battle. They offer their help. However, Edge tells them that it is not their problem. However, Rydia bursts into tears, after reflecting on all the pain and suffering Golbez has caused, killing Tellah, and supposedly killing Yang Fang Leiden and Cid Pollendina. Edge then agrees to join because he does not want to see Rydia, a "pretty girl," cry. Rosa heals him, and he flirts with Rosa as well. Rydia is disgusted by Edge's attitude, and Edge officially joins the party.

The crown prince of Damcyan, Edward fell in love with the sage Tellah's daughter, Anna. When Tellah finds out about this, he refuses to consent to their being together, thus they eloped when the kingdom of Baron bombed Damcyan castle. He detests his own status as royalty, and has an exquisite voice backed up by great skill in musical instruments. At first, he joins Cecil so he can enter a cave, but then he decides to continue on with them as they plan to rise up against Baron, the mightiest kingdom in the land.

FuSoYa is a player character in the game Final Fantasy IV. He is a Lunarian from The Moon, and it is his job to watch over the sleep of the Lunarians. He is the brother of KluYa, and is thus the uncle of both Cecil Harvey and Golbez. He is the oldest and wisest character in the game. FuSoYa was supposed to watch over the Lunar Sleep. However, a Lunarian named Zemus wanted to destroy the Earth so the Lunarians could take it over. FuSoYa waited on The Moon for the one who would help defeat Zemus to arrive. This person just happened to be Cecil, who was accompanied by Rydia, Rosa Farrell, and Edge Geraldine at the time. FuSoYa told them of Zemus' plan. Zemus was gathering the Crystals in order to activate the Giant of Bab-il, which was a wish granting giant who would destroy the world on command. He told the party that Zemus was manipulating Golbez in order to achieve this goal. He then told the party to return to the Tower of Bab-il in order to stop the Giant. However, because it was shielded, FuSoYa joined the party in order to deactivate it.

  Kain Highwind

Cecil's toughest rival and best friend. Kain has strong feelings for Rosa as well, and he does his best not to show them. He finds himself in the service of Golbez after Cecil is relieved of his command of Baron's Red Wings. Kain was born in Baron, and he was raised with Cecil by the King of Baron. The king wanted Kain to become a Dark Knight like Cecil was, but Kain wanted to follow in his father's footsteps of being a Dragoon and defending the castle. As the adventure opens, Kain tries to defend Cecil after Cecil was discharged from the command of the Red Wings.

Palom is a playable character in the game Final Fantasy IV. He is a Black Mage from Mysidia, and he trains together with his twin sister Porom. He is described as a show-off, and is very casual, even to adults. He even describes himself as "The Mysidian Genius." This, combined with his inflated ego, causes Porom to settle him down, either using words or by slapping him in the face.

Rosa Farrell is a player character in the game Final Fantasy IV. She is a childhood friend of Cecil Harvey's from Baron, and is a skilled archer and White Mage. She became a White Mage because her mother was a White Mage who fought alongside her father, who was a Dark Knight like Cecil. She and Cecil are in love. Kain Highwind also has romantic feelings for her, but he tends to hide them because he wants to keep his friendship with Cecil and Rosa. She is gentle and kind by nature.

Rydia, sometimes referred to as Rydia of Mist, is a playable character in Final Fantasy IV. She is a Summoner from the village of Mist and is one of the most powerful Summoners in the village. This is due to the fact that she is only seven years old, as summoned monsters from the Land of Summons tend to trust innocent, young girls more than they do adults. Rydia was born to one of the few remaining pure-blood Summoner families in Mist. Her mother was known as the protector of Mist, and she used the Mist Dragon summon to protect her village.

Tellah is a player character in the game Final Fantasy IV. He is the Great Sage of Mysidia, and thus is a master of both White and Black Magic. However, due to his old age, he can only remember a few of his many spells. He has a short temper, and will not hesitate to get defensive when something happens to someone or something he is close to. It is unknown when Tellah left Mysidia. However, it is known that he had a daughter, Anna. He was overprotective of Anna, especially after the death of his wife. One day, Edward Chris von Muir, the prince of Damcyan, disguised as a Bard, came to visit Anna, and the two fell in love and ran away. Tellah was furious, and went out to search for Anna. However, he was very weak and could not make it on his own. He was having trouble defeating the Octomam, a monster that was guarding the Watery Pass. When Cecil Harvey and Rydia were traveling through the Watery Pass searching for the Sand Ruby, they came across Tellah and offered their help. Tellah accepted, and the three were able to defeat Octomam and head to Damcyan.

Yang Fang Leiden is a player character in the game Final Fantasy IV. He is a Monk from the kingdom of Fabul, and he is one of the highest ranked and most respected of the monks. Despite this, though, he is an honourable man, and does not bask in his glory. He is well disciplined and respectful. He is also married. Yang is first seen on Mt. Hobs where he is battling several of Golbez's monsters. He is the last survivor, as most of his men had died. However, Cecil Harvey, Rydia, Edward Chris von Muir, and Rosa Farrell offer their help in defeating the most powerful of these monsters: the Mombomb. They eventually succeed, and Cecil warns Yang that this attack may have been a diversion so that Golbez, using Baron's Red Wings, may attack a defenceless Fabul in order to steal the Crystal of Air. Yang initially does not trust Cecil, as he is a Dark Knight. However, the others vouch for him, and Yang accepts Cecil's help in going back to Fabul
