Squall is one of the first characters Sora meets in Hollow Bastion. He is now using the name "Leon", and seems that he ended up there, after being unable to protect his own world (and presumably, his friends) from the heartless. He has vowed not to use the name Squall until he has avenged his failure. He does not appear to be aware of Selphie's existance. Although Sora grew up with Selphie, he does not know of her connection to Squall.

It is presumed that Squall is the same character as in Final Fantasy VIII, rather than an alternate version.
