Black Mage/Black Wizard
The Black mage may not be physically strong, but more than makes this up in his deadly arsenal of black magic and spells. Also gaining some intelligence every level, when he becomes a Black Wizard, he can caste any Black magic spell, making him a dangerous adversary. Also, the black mage has other status spells that will make your enemy an easy foe. Choose wisely which spells you will choose.

  Monk/Master

Monk/Master
The Monk is another character who improves vastly upon getting to the next class. The monk's primary weapon will always be his fists, which will do alot of damage. After his change to "Master" he will be the most powerful fighter and since he gains vitality every level, he will always have plently of life battles.

  Red Mage/Red Wizard

Red Mage/Red Wizard
This is a very versatile magic user early in the game and will help alot if you tend to have trouble early game. Unforuntly, while he is great in early game, after mid game, he sorta drops off and gets stale. His Transfer to Red Wizard doesn't really do much for him and overall you are better just getting a White or Black Mage. But if your new to the game, it would be best to start of with a Red Mage since it is best to get magic from both worlds (white and black).

  Thief/Ninja

Thief/Ninja
The thief, although at first seeming weak is not such a bad investment. He'll gain luck every single level and most of the time agility bonuses. And eventually he will turn into a ninja when class change occurs. Once there, he will be able equip even more weapons than the knight can use and be able to cast low level black and white magic skills. That will also include the all mighty haste.

  Warrior/Knight

Warrior/Knight
This is the most balanced of the possible choices, with the Fighter gaining Stength every level and agility almost every level. Eventually the fighter will turn into the Knight who will have the ability to use low level white magic and also have the ability to equip almost anything in the game.

Item id #728
  White Mage/White Wizard

White Mage/White Wizard
The white mage is a good choice, as she has a ton of healing spells at her disposal, even early game, allowing you to heal your members, instead of scurrying for Potions early game. And a nice benfit is how she gains intelligence almost every level. When you get far enough she turns into a White Wizard and then can cast any sort of white spell you can imagine.
