Click on the below links to be taken to the particular mode:
Ally
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
The overdrive gauge will increase when its your allies turn. However the increase is very small and not worth it.
- Requirements –
Just battle and eventually you should learn it, you just have to let your allies have A LOT and I mean A LOT of turns (around 10,000)
- Usage –
Not really a good overdrive to be used, Stoic is definitely better than this one, even against weak enemies.
Avenger
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge rises when your allies are KO'd during a battle.
- Requirements –
Just fight strong enemies that KO your allies frequently, and also have the Auto-Phoenix ability to help you out. You will require MANY Phoenix downs to do get this.
- Usage –
Used best when facing strong enemies as your sure to be KO'd sooner or later.
Comrade
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
The overdrive gauge increases when your allies are attacked (nothing happens to the overdrive bar if you are attacked). Increases depending on damage dealt to your allies
- Requirements –
You must let a certain amount of damage to be dealt to your allies when you are in the party to learn this mode. Just go somewhere with strong enemies and allow them to attack your allies, and you should learn it in no time.
- Usage –
This is good only when you don't have an overdrive mode such as Warrior. Its best not to use it if you have strong characters as it wont increase much due to the little amount of damage caused.
Coward
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge increases when you flee from battles
- Requirements –
Use escape and Flee command numerous times (approximately 300-500 times) to learn this mode.
- Usage –
This is one of the worst modes to used as you shouldn't be running away in the first place. But it can be an easy way to get a full overdrive gauge without fighting.
Dancer
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Your overdrive gauge increases when you evade enemy attacks
- Requirements –
You must evade MANY attacks, best if you have a very high luck & evasion characteristic on the character you want to get this mode for as a high luck and evasion will make enemies miss when they attack your characters.
- Usage –
Good for characters with high Luck, Evasion and Agility.
Daredevil
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Your characters overdrive limit will increase when the characters current HP is half its Max HP (the Health bar is yellow). The it will increase every turn, and the increase will be determined by the amount of HP you have lost.
- Requirements –
Fight battles whilst in critical condition (have HP lower than half your current HP)
- Usage –
Its best to give this to a character that has high HP and very high Defence and Magic Defence so the enemies attacks don't kill them.
Healer
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge increases when you heal an ally. The increase is determined by the amount of HP your allies recover.
- Requirements –
Use White magic spells such as Cure and Curaga on your party and you should learn this after you have healed a certain amount of HP.
- Usage –
This is a good mode for the healer of the group, and particularly effective against bosses as your allies will tend to require constant healing.
Hero
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive Gauge increases when you encounter a enemy with a higher HP than you. This only increases at the beginning of the battle.
- Requirements –
Face a lot of enemies with higher HP than yours. Shouldn't be too hard to do so unless you have tried to Max out your HP by customising the sphere grid.
- Usage –
The only good place to use this overdrive (and a good place to learn it) would be the Omega Ruins, however, there are other modes which give you a much higher increase, so this isn't a mode id recommend.
Rook
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge increases whenever a magical attack is blocked or redirected by using Nul-[element] or Reflect.
- Requirements –
Block magical attacks to learn this mode, its best to just equip a reflect ring on your team and fight against elemental flans which will reflect the spell back at them healing them and increasing your blocked magic count.
- Usage –
Best for battles when enemies are of a particular type and use magical attacks.
Slayer
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Your overdrive gauge increases when the character kills an enemy. The increase it would gain from killing a weak enemy is the same as if it were to kill a strong enemy.
- Requirements –
Let the character kill a lot of enemies and it will eventually learn this overdrive mode.
- Usage –
This is one of the best Modes in the game as the increase doesn't vary depending on the strength of the enemy, and the increase it self is close to a third of the overdrive gauge allowing you to get a full overdrive every 4 kills.
Solo
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Your overdrive gauge increases as you battle enemies on your own (your party are KO'd) or when you are the only character in your team.
- Requirements –
Fight battles where your team members have been KO'd or when you are the only one in the party (such as in the beginning when Tidus is the only member of the team). Just beware that you aren't KO'd as this will get you a Game over and you will have to do it all over again.
- Usage –
You get quite a large increase, however there isn't a real use for this mode as you'll most likely want to fight with a full team. However you can use this mode to get abnormal amount of AP (look at the tricks section for more details)
Stoic
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
The overdrive gauge increases when you are attacked. The gauge will increase depending on how much damage has or would have been caused.
- Requirements –
This is the default overdrive setting, and is the only one available at the beginning of the game.
- Usage –
This is a great overdrive setting for your weaker characters, as this means they will get a charge in overdrive fairly quickly, and wont have to wait too long. Its also good against bosses seeing how they get most turns which can deal a lot of damage.
Sufferer
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
The overdrive gauge will increase when you are inflicted with a status effect.
- Requirements –
You must be afflicted with a status ailment MANY times for you to learn this ability. However, you only get the increase when you are afflicted with the status ailment.
- Usage –
Best used against opponents that cause multiple status effects such as the Marlboro, however its more likely that you will be killed if you use it against Marlboro's as they can confuse you.
Tactician
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge increases when you inflict a status effect on the enemy. The effect must be successful, and the enemy must not be immune to it for it to count.
- Requirements –
Use Bio, silence, blind or Zombie status attack many times on enemies and you should learn it eventually. Wakka should be one of the first to learn it if you use him a lot as he has attacks which can cause a status effect.
- Usage –
This is the worst mode to use against bosses as they are generally immune to nearly everything. Give this mode to characters that use a lot of status inflicting spells.
Victim
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge rises whilst you are inflicted with a status effect.
- Requirements –
Be inflicted with abnormal status's during battles. It may be easier for you if you become a Zombiefied and fight in battles as this isn't really a negative effect except you cant be healed, however if you use a reflect ring and are up against a flan you wont need to worry.
- Usage –
This overdrive mode is just a better version of sufferer and so its better when you are facing enemies which cause status ailments.
Victor
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
Overdrive gauge increases when the party wins a battle. Increase is determined by the strength of the enemy.
- Requirements –
Just win a lot of Battles and you should learn this overdrive mode
- Usage –
Win 4 battles and your whole team should get full overdrives making this a great overdrive mode at later stages in the game. Best used if one character has overdrive mode set to slayer, as that character can do the killing gaining an overdrive every 1-2 battles, and the other two can get it every 4 battles.
Warrior
(needs to be ported to the wiki!)
- Description –
The overdrive gauge increases when you cause damage to the enemy. The amount of damage caused determines how much the overdrive increases by.
- Requirements –
To get this overdrive mode, you will need to cause a certain amount of damage to enemies. This means you will need to attack the enemy a lot of times, around 1000-2000 at the beginning of the game. However this will vary depending on the strength of your team. A strong team can learn it in less time.
- Usage –
Best used on weak enemies as bosses and opponents in later stages will sustain very little damage. Its one that you should use as soon as you get it, as its most likely to be the first mode that you get (not including the default Stoic). It can be very good for a strong fighters.
