Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca
Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca, or simply Ashe, is one of the main protagonists of the Final Fantasy XII series. Following the invasion of her kingdom by Archadia, she goes into hiding under the alias Amalia. Strong-willed, she seeks to restore Dalmasca to its former glory and claim her rightful place on the throne.
When Vayne Solidor is made consul of Dalmasca, the Resistance plans an attack on his fete at the palace. At the same time, street urchin Vaan and two sky pirates Balthier and Fran each plan their own incursion into the palace treasury. Vaan successfully plunders the Dusk Shard. The fete, however, is a trap for the Resistance, and Ashe becomes separated from her comrades. She is rescued by Vaan and travels with him and the sky pirates through the Garamsythe Waterway. At the end of the sewers, she is captured and taken aboard the Leviathan airship. Eventually, Vaan, Balthier, and Fran, joined now by Basch and Penelo, are captured by Archadian forces and taken aboard the same airship. When the Dusk Shard that Vaan holds glows in Ashe's presence, it affirms that she is the princess. Threatened, Judge Ghis destroys the stone and announces his plan to execute Ashe as an imposter. Defeating Ghis in battle, the party escapes the Leviathan and heads for Bhujerba to speak with Ondore.
Ondore, though happy to see Ashe alive, offers little help, explaining that he cannot offer aid without proof of her lineage. Thus, Ashe intends to find the Dawn Shard. After she is caught by Vaan trying to steal Balthier's airship, the Strahl, she offers the sky pirates Raithwall's treasure in exchange for their help. Balthier agrees on the condition that Ashe relinquishes her wedding ring to him as well. She reluctantly parts with the trinket, and the party leaves for the Tomb of Raithwall.
At the tomb, Ashe sees an apparition of her deceased husband, Rasler, to whom she promises vengeance on the Empire. After claiming the Dawn Shard, the group is again captured by Judge Ghis and taken aboard the Shiva. Ghis reveals that her former captain and fellow Resistance member, Vossler, has forged an agreement with Vayne that allows Ashe to rule Dalmasca as a puppet of the Empire. Ashe vehemently refuses, but when Ghis threatens the lives of her comrades, she gives him the Dawn Shard. Ghis decides to test the stone for authenticity, but his actions cause the ship to react negatively. Vossler halts the escape of Ashe and her companions, but is defeated at their hands. The party escapes as Vossler, Ghis, and the rest of the fleet are destroyed in the explosion. They recover the Dawn Shard from the disaster, and Ashe’s determination to free Dalmasca from Archadian influence is renewed.
After the death of Emperor Gramis, Ashe determines that she may never reclaim her position and resolves to destroy the Dawn Shard in order to keep it from the Empire. At Giruvegan, Ashe is confronted by the Occuria who deem her the new Dynast-King and give her the Treaty Blade, the only sword able to cut a new piece of nethicite from the Sun-Cryst. They require that she destroy the Empire and the heretic, Venat, to restore their authority over history.
After leaving, Ashe is faced with the decision of following the Occuria's orders, or using the Treaty Blade to destroy the Sun-Cryst, keeping its power from being used. When Rasler's ghost appears yet again encouraging her to destroy the Empire, Ashe realizes that it is not her husband, but an apparition created by the Occuria to control her. She raises the sword to destroy the Sun-Cryst, but unwilling to allow her to sacrifice herself, Reddas takes it from her and destroys the Sun-Cryst himself, dying in the resulting explosion.
Ashe and her party board the Bahamut where they engage Vayne in battle. They defeat him and escape, ceasing the war and declaring Dalmasca's freedom.
One year later, in the closing scenes of the game, Ashe's coronation has been planned. Her new position keeps her distant from her former companions. Penelo narrates that Ashe misses Basch, who has since taken up position as Judge under Larsa's rule. Some time after her coronation is complete and Ashe is declared the queen of Dalmasca, she finds her wedding ring returned.
Ashe returns in this game as a playable character. Now the queen of Dalmasca, she seeks Vaan's aid to fight the Judge of Wings.
