Balthier is one of the main playable protagonists of the Final Fantasy XII series. This sky pirate would describe himself as a noble thief, stealing only from those who deserve it. He goes where he pleases, swearing fealty to no one. While roaming the skies of Ivalice with Fran, his Viera partner, he still makes time to charm the ladies with his silver tongue and put wrongs to right - grinning all the while. It is eventually revealed that his real name is Ffamran Mid Bunansa.

Final Fantasy XII
Balthier, self-proclaimed "leading man", is introduced at the Royal Palace in Rabanastre alongside his partner Fran, seeking to plunder the same treasure as street urchin, Vaan. Unfortunately, Vaan has already grabbed the Goddess Magicite and refuses to turn it over. At the same time, the Resistance has planned an attack on the new consul of Dalmasca, Vayne Solidor. The trio of thieves is forced to make their escape as the Ifrit attacks the Resistance members. When their hover crashes, Balthier, Fran, and Vaan set course through the Garamsythe Waterway where they meet Amalia, a resistance member under attack. She temporarily joins their ranks, but they are captured and separated at the end of the waterway. Penelo attempts to plead with the Archadian soldiers to free Vaan, but Balthier intercepts, telling her that he will return safely. This small meeting between Penelo and Balthier is witnessed by headhunter Ba'Gamnan.Balthier, Fran, and Vaan are sent to Nalbina Dungeon, where Balthier and Vaan are forced to fight a group of Seeq prisoners bare-handed. While the trio makes its escape, Ba'Gamnan arrives seeking out Balthier. With Judge Gabranth's permission, Ba'Gamnan apparently has free reign over Dalmasca and Archadia to earn the bounty on Balthier's head. On the way out of the dungeons, the group encounters a caged Basch fon Ronsenburg, imprisoned for murdering King Raminas. When Fran drops the cage to enable their escape, Basch joins the group as they make their way to the freedom of Rabanastre.
When the group arrives in the city proper, they disband. But some time later, Vaan and Basch find Balthier and Fran at the Sandsea, seeking transportation aboard the Strahl. Local proprieter Migelo arrives announcing that Penelo has been kidnapped in the name of Balthier. The party then heads to Lhusu Mines to rescue her. Upon arriving at the mines, the party is ambushed by Ba'Gamnan and his bangaa crew. Depending on the player's actions, the party either escapes their clutches or fights and defeats them. Exiting the mines, the group is captured once again by Archadian forces and taken to the Leviathan where they meet up with Amalia, who is revealed to be Princess Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca, thought to have committed suicide after her father's murder. Ashe requests that the troupe of sky pirates kidnap her and fight to end the Archadian hold on Dalmasca, offering them the treasure of the Dynast-King. Balthier agrees on the condition that Ashe relinquishes her wedding ring to him as well. She reluctantly parts with the trinket, and the party leaves for the Tomb of Raithwall. The group, now fully established, escapes the airship with little struggle.
When the group reaches the Sandsea, Balthier reveals to Ashe that he was once a Judge in the Archadian regime. He was born Ffamran Mid Bunansa, son to Dr. Cid, mad scientist working from Draklor Laboratory. His father helped make him a Judge at the young age of sixteen. After his father returned from Giruvegan, Balthier noticed a change in his father's personality. Dr. Cid's sanity was deteriorating, and he was talking to someone that wasn't there. Eventually, Balthier left his position as Judge and stole an airship which he would name the Strahl. He took up the alias "Balthier" and a life as a sky pirate. He would at some point during this time meet Fran and accept her as his partner.
When the party reaches Draklor Laboratory, Balthier confront his father. Venat reveals itself to the party, and Balthier realizes that his father wasn't insane at all, but under the influence of the heretic Occurian. Dr. Cid escapes, but the party engages him again at the Pharos at Ridorana where they are forced to fight and defeat him. Balthier briefly reconciles with his father just before Cid's death. But even as he dies, his father refuses to give up the idea that his work was for the greater good.
The party ultimately confronts Vayne aboard the Bahamut where they fight and defeat him. While the rest of the party escapes, Balthier and Fran stay behind to deter the exploding Bahamut away from Rabanastre. Though the two are successful, they are believed to have died in the explosion.
In the closing scenes of the game, Penelo narrates that one year after the events, Balthier and Fran have reclaimed the Strahl from Vaan. Balthier also leaves behind Ashe's wedding ring with a note describing that he found something better, the Cache of Glabados.
