Final Fantasy XII
Basch is introduced in the opening sequence alongside Prince Rasler mounted on chocobos, defending Nalbina Fortress from Archadian forces. However, an Archadian archer shoots Rasler, and Captain Basch is forced to retreat with Rasler in tow. Basch returns with Vossler and a new troop of soldiers to rescue King Raminas, whom has been tricked into signing a false peace treaty. Just outside of the fortress, Basch finds a young soldier named Reks willing to join their raid. Basch moves up ahead only to fall into yet another trap set by his twin brother, Judge Gabranth. When Reks reaches the throne room, he finds the king slain. Gabranth, posing as Basch, admits to killing the king and runs through Reks as well, ultimately killing him. Basch is led away in chains to Nalbina Dungeon, leading the people to wonder what could drive so loyal a man to slay his oathsworn liege.
Two years later, as sky pirates Balthier and Fran, and street urchin Vaan attempt an escape from Nalbina Dungeons, they come across a caged Basch. Recognizing him, Vaan attacks the cage, raging at Basch for killing his brother, Reks, while Basch pleads his case. Fran is forced to drop the cage in order to make their escape, and Basch temporarily joins their ranks as they travel through Barheim Passage. Basch explains that he and his brother, Noah, were born in the Republic of Landis. When Archadia captured Landis, Basch fled to Dalmasca in hopes he would be able to find a way to free their homeland. Meanwhile Noah stayed behind with their ill mother. After her death, Noah joined the Archadian forces to eventually become a Judge Magister.Upon reaching Rabanastre, the group disperses, though not for long. Vaan, delivering a sword to Vossler, defends his brother’s honor. Basch supports him, explaining that Reks was just the witness they needed. His story convinces his old friend little, so Vossler chooses to test Basch by giving him a task. Basch, Vaan, Balthier, and Fran join together to travel to the sky-city Bhujerba in an attempt to rescue the kidnapped Penelo.
After they successfully escape the Lhusu Mines, the group is captured by Archadian forces and taken aboard the Leviathan. Here, Basch is reunited with the princess Ashe, though her welcome of him is none too warm. Vossler, a member of the Resistance with Ashe, joins with Basch and his group to rescue Ashe from the Archadian clutches.
The party acquires the Dawn Shard as proof of Ashe’s lineage, but upon exiting the Tomb of Raithwall, they are captured by Judge Ghis. Here, Vossler shows his true intent; he has formed an agreement with Vayne Solidor to allow Ashe to rule Dalmasca as a puppet of the Empire. As the group escapes, they are intercepted by Vossler, who forces them to fight. After being defeated, Vossler admits that his loyalty was only to Dalmasca, and he asks Basch to protect the princess.
Ashe eventually realizes that she must destroy all pieces of nethicite to prevent its power from falling into the wrong hands. Upon reaching the Sun-Cryst at the Pharos at Ridorana, Basch finds his brother whom he hadn’t since the incident two years prior. Basch defends the honor of both Dalmasca and the princess, but Gabranth, refusing to acknowledge his brother’s honor, attacks the party. Gabranth is defeated by their hands and forced to flee.
Later, the two meet again aboard the sky fortress Bahamut. Gabranth again attacks the party and is defeated. Gabranth, turned by the conversations of with Basch, attacks Vayne, but is fatally wounded. The party takes Gabranth on board the Strahl, where he lay dying. Just before his final breath, he asks Basch to protect Larsa and Archadia. Basch promises to defend both, and in the ending sequence of the game, Basch has taken up his brother’s station as Judge Magister under Larsa’s rule.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
