Bosses (FFVIII)

Final Fantasy VIII, like most games, has a healthy amount of boss monsters and end of disc villains to battle against. Boss battles differ from normal monster battles, in that they're not random, and you will see the boss outside of the battle screen.

Game Over
If all your party members are Ko'd in a boss battle, you'll get a Game Over much as you would in an ordinary battle, and you'll have to reload a previous save game. In order to progress in the game, there are some mandatory bosses that cannot be skipped.
Optional vs. Required
As well as the mandatory story bosses, there are also a number of optional GFs and Bosses. See GF sidequests for which GFs are optionally obtained via sidequests.
At the end of disc 4, the only mandatory boss in Ultimecia's Castle is the final battle against Ultimecia herself. All other guardian bosses can be defeated optionally; but choosing not to do so, will result in your abilities remaining locked. (see Ultimecia's Castle)
