Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies, titled Bravely Default: Flying Fairy in Japan, is a Nintendo 3DS game originally released in Japan only. Due to its popularity in Japan, the game later became available in Europe on December 6, 2013 and North America on February 7, 2014. Japan received an updated version of the game to coincide with the Eurpoean and North American versions called Bravely Default: For the Sequel. It is considered by the publishers to be a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, and its job system has been compared to that of Final Fantasy V.

A free-to-play Japanese browser game titled Bravely Default: Praying Brage was also produced. A full sequel was also released in Japan titled Bravely Second: End Layer, and is expected to be released in Europe and North America in the first quarter of 2016. A free-to-play iOS/Android game, Bravely Archive: D's Report, was released in Japan, and is a re-imagining of events that have taken place in the Bravely Default world.

Destined to become a Warrior of Light, Tiz Arrior and his companions journey to free the Wind Crystal from darkness. However on his travels with Agnès Oblige they are pursued by the Jobmasters of the Eternian's Air Force who pursue the power of the crystals and those who control them.

[edit] Gameplay

Bravely Default features a system that uses random encounters in the field, much as the battle system was in Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The battles are turn-based encounters with a large emphasis on the Job System prevalent in many Final Fantasy games, notably Final Fantasy V. The game utilizes a new form of stocked points known as "BP" or "Brave Points". These points stack on top each other with each turn. Each normal attack uses up 1 BP (going from 0 to -1), this point is then automatically rejuvenated the next turn. Brave Points can be stacked by use of the new Default mechanic, which allows the character to enter a defense stance, using up no BP. Since no BP was used that turn it stacks up, enabling you to use more than one move the next turn. To use more than 1 BP a turn, you can choose the other new mechanic called Brave, that allows you to execute up to 4 moves per turn, even when at the neutral 0. Using more BP than you have stacked will cause your character unable to move for the amount of extra turns you have used up (for example, if you had selected Brave 3 times and attacked 3 times a turn without stacking BP up, your counter will lay at -3, meaning you are unable to attack for three turns until BP has returned to 0.)

Similar to the job system in Final Fantasy V, each job will have specific abilities attached to them which can be learned by leveling the job up with consistent use. Each job is capped at level 14 with one job command and one specialty ability that are able to be used even without equipping it. These different abilities can either be command or support based. However, there is a cost to the use of each ability, some requiring MP, some BP and others even require HP. Leveling your character and job happen independently of one another. Where the Fairy Flies also introduces a new feature called "Abilink" which enables you to borrow job levels from your friends' characters.

There is a minigame in which the player can restore Tiz's village. In addition, players can speed the progress of the minigame by utilizing the Nintendo 3DS StreetPass. By reclaiming territories and upgrading the shops within Norende, the player gains access to additional items and equipment, as well as special moves.

Bravely Default utilizes a turn-based combat system with the support of a character job system. Players can use "Friend Summon" to enlist the aid of characters from their friends' list or via the StreetPass feature. The Job system is similar to the jobs of Final Fantasy V, and characters learn abilities by using the jobs in battle. Different job types are acquired throughout the game. Certain classes can summon creatures into battle.

Each weapon in the game has three levels of Special attacks. The highest level is called "Deathblow" that is unique to each character and can also be customized with dialogue options and effects.

The game employs a job system similar to that seen in Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, however there are some key differences between the two. One of these is that an item called "Asterisk" is needed in order for a character to change jobs in the game. In total, there are 24 jobs available in the game, and each job has its own level (the more it is used, the higher the level,) capped of 14.

There is initially one job available from the start of game: Freelancer, while the others become available later in the game.

  • Tiz Arrior - a 16 year old boy who defied the odds and survived the Great Chasm that left a large hole in Caldisla, swallowing up his hometown and causing the death of his only surviving relative, his brother, Til. He meets up with Agnès and is driven by his will to protect her.
  • Agnès Oblige - a 17 year old girl who has the power to control the Wind Crystal. After it become corrupt with evil, she left on a journey to try and purify it again.
  • Edea Lee - originally a member of the Eterian Sky Knights, Edea joins up with the group after deciding to help Tiz and Ringabel rather than capture them.
  • Ringabel - an 18 year old, flirtatious adventurer. He lost his memory some years ago and travels around with his mysterious "D's Journal" that has the ability to predict the future.
  • Airy - a fairy-like creature who is one of the Crystal Spirits that accompanies Agnès on her journey. She acts as the groups guide, offering hints and tips as to the next destination.

[edit] Demo

A demo of the game was released on the European eShop on November 17, 2013. The demo features four main missions which don't stretch from fetch and carry missions with each subsequent mission requiring the player to enter a dungeon and battle a monster at the end to obtain the required item(s). It shows off the battle system and the use of the "Brave" and "Default" features that preserve and use up BP (Brave Points) which are refreshed by 1 each turn after use. Nine of the 24 jobs are available to experiment with using the main character, Tiz, in the demo and they include:

All of the available Jobs are capped at level 3 and could be switched between freely. Any progress made on the demo will be transferred over to the full game.

Also in the demo was the ability to use the Virtual Reality integration by selecting "AR Movies" at the main screen. AR Cards can be downloaded and printed from the Nintendo Website.

[edit] Packaging & Distribution

The original release of the game in Japan offered fans a Collector's Edition which included a copy of the game, an art book, the game's original soundtrack, a poster, and a Nintendo 3DS protective case. The package sold for ¥12,800 on the Square Enix e-Store.

The same Collector's Edition was available with the European release through the European Square Enix e-Store. A Deluxe Collector's Edition was available in both Europe and Australia which included a copy of the game, the game's soundtrack, an art book, AR cards, and a figurine of Agnès.

Along with the European and North American release of the game, Japan received an updated version of the game. New features include upgraded town graphics, auto-battle system, language options for English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German, additional save slots, the ability to change the encounter rate, and more.

A direct sequel for the game was announced on December 4, 2013 for Japan, entitled Bravely Second. The game follows from Bravely Default and occurs two and a half years after the ending of the first game. Akihiko Yoshida, character designer for Final Fantasy Tactics, continued to work for the sequel even after leaving the company.
