Butterfly Catcher
From Final Fantasy - Wiki on Neoseeker
Butterfly Catcher is a mini-game from Final Fantasy X can be played as many times as you desire, however prizes are a one time thing.
The mini-game can be played 3 times with different prizes, the first time is the first time you go to Macalania forest before you defeat Spherimorph, the second time you can play it after defeating Spherimorph. After you get the Airship you can return here and play it again, you can also get Kimahri's Sigil. If you miss playing it one of these times then you won't get the prize for that version.
There are two locations within Macalania Woods to play this game. The first is in Macalania Woods-Central and the other is Macalania Woods-North. You can speak to the creature that has a harp on its arm for an explanation of the mini game. To begin the game, touch the nearest butterfly. The object is to touch seven blue butterflies before the time runs out. If you touch a red butterfly, you will initiate a battle and lose one second of the time. Prior to defeating Spherimorph, you will be allowed forty seconds to complete the game. Before gaining control of the airship, you will be allowed thirty seconds. Finally, after gaining the airship, the number of red butterflies increases. If you catch seven blue butterflies before the time runs out, a chest will appear with a prize inside. Note that the chest disappears if you leave the area. And while you can play the mini game as many times as you like, you can only receive the prizes once.
On the Maps below the red dots represent the red butterflies which you must avoid, going through one of these will start a battle and will also take some time of the clock. The blue dots are the butterflies which you must try and get, get through all of these within the time limit and the treasure chest will appear (the yellow circle with a star in the middle).
The first two versions are similar and much easier:
The map on the left is the central forest and the map on the right is the northern most forest. Click on the maps to view an enlarged version.
The third version is harder to complete and has more red butterflies which you must avoid.
The prizes for completing are as follows:
- You will only receive a Teleport Sphere for completing one of the sections. If you complete both, then you will receive Kimahri’s Saturn Sigil instead.
This may seem like a frustrating mini game at first, but the more you do it, the more familiar you will become with the locations of the butterflies and the curves of the paths.
