Celes Chere is one of the main playable protagonists of Final Fantasy VI. Celes was born and raised in the Imperial City of Vector and was soon given to Dr. Cid as specimen for a Magitek Knight. Celes is one of two people that underwent a refined Magic Infusion process that greatly enhanced their ability and gave them the power of Magic. The first being Kefka, however his mind was altered and became mad, while Celes remained intact and with a conscience more than crystal clear. Celes advances through the ranks of The Gestahlian Empire rapidly, and becomes one of Gestahl's three leading Generals, alongside Kefka, and Leo. Celes may have a calm and peaceful demeanor about her, however she is a force to be reckoned with in battle, and can show no mercy when needed, as she personally torched the town of Maranda during one of her assaults on the Empire's behalf.

Celes is accused of treason on reasons unknown, but most likely staged by Kefka, and is inprisoned and tortured by the Empire. Locke Cole manages to come across her while in South Figaro and releases her from her chains, since she reminded him of his deceased love, Rachel. Locke and Celes introduce each other and sneak out of South Figaro, and head to Narshe, where she defects from the Empire, and joins the Returners. Celes and Locke appear to be romantically involved throughout the story as well.

During the World of Ruin, Celes is your primary starting character. She awakens one year after Kefka destroys and alters the shape of the world. She is on a deserted island, with Dr. Cid, and appear to be the only two survivors left in the world. Cid is very sick, and Celes tries to take care of him by catching him fish for a few days in hope of him getting better. Cid is just too ill though, and passes away, leaving Celes all alone. Going insane from isolation, and knowing that she is the last human alive, she attempts to suicide off a cliff, but survives the fall. She discovers Locke's bandana and also a letter left behind by Cid saying there is a raft under their house. She takes it to mainland, and starts finding her comrades one by one, and leads the assault on Kefka for one last time.

Celes is very well rounded during combat and has great physical and magical abilities. She can learn some Magic spells by default, without the use of Magicite. Her Runic ability allows her to absorb any magic spell cast by the enemy, and convert it into MP. Celes is your typical Holy Knight, which can dish out massive physical damage, but at the same time Heal the party and bombard the enemy with spells.
