Squall Leonhart

Squall Leonhart

Main Page: Squall Leonhart

Squall is the young seventeen year old enigmatic protagonist of Final Fantasy VIII. A SeeD candidate at the onset, Squall wakes up in the infirmary with a head injury that creates a permanent scar, caused by antagonist Seifer Almasy. A mission to the dukedom of Dollet brings Squall into contact with some Galbadian soldiers which is just the beginning of what will soon become a larger problem. Making the position of SeeD with little effort, Squall's first post is to be sent to Timber to assist with it's liberation by special request of Rinoa Heartilly, the leader and princess of the Timber Owls. This chance meeting creates the thread that ties the events of Squall's life heavily to the protection of not just Timber, but the much larger world.

Squall is one of very few gunblade specialists that reside at Balamb Garden. Headmaster Cid would be elated if Squall could join the ranks of SeeD as one of the only specialists of this particular weapon as it has been awhile since he has seen anyone with such talent. Squall is also considered to be one of Headmaster Cid's favourites as he later is elevated to headmaster position in light of events that lead to a conflict with Galbadia Garden.

Cool, calm, collected and level headed, Squall is not an easy guy to read and he generally tends to keep to himself. Squall is often seen pushing people away from himself, in an effort to prevent himself from building any friendships or relationships. Any effort made to befriend him is often turned down with an indifferent "whatever".

Squall's Limit Break, Renzokuken consists of a trigger bar whereby the player must press a button when a moving line hits a certain point in the bar. If done successfully, this will sometimes trigger a finishing move that can be quite devestating to the enemy.

Rinoa Heartilly

Rinoa Heartilly

Main Page: Rinoa Heartilly

Rinoa is the seventeen year old lead female character of Final Fantasy VIII. She is the leader of a small activist group called the Timber Owls who are against the occupation of the Galbadian military in the city of Timber. Rinoa first appears at the SeeD Inaugeration ball where she has come to request the assistance of SeeD in the liberation of Timber, though at that time it is also suggested that she is the girlfriend of Seifer Almasy. At the ball Rinoa meets and dances with Squall Leonhart who is quick to learn the steps of the dance. Later Rinoa fronts an assult on a train that is suspected to be carrying President Vinzer Deiling which is foiled by a body double that is impersonating the President for his own protection. Thrown into dangerous situations on numerous occassions, Rinoa always manages to get out of them with the help of Squall Leonhart.

Rinoa's weapon is the Pinwheel. A small circular disc that sits upon a projectile that rests upon her arm and acts like a boomerang in that it will always return to her once fired. It is not an extremely powerful weapon, but it is useful where distanced attacks are required.

A very carefree young individual, Rinoa can often be seen formulating plans without much deep thought put into them. This can often come across as being childish, which is observed on a few occassions by other party members, NPCs, and the player. She tries really hard to break into Squall Leonhart's defences and is eventually successful.

Rinoa has two Limit Breaks. The first one utilizes her dog, Angelo who will come to aid Rinoa in battle, performing random acts that have been taught to him through the process of setting a skill and learning it through walking around on the field map. Rinoa's second Limit Break Angel Wing is related to her latent Sorceress ability that allows her to cast magic from her stocked inventory.

Seifer Almasy

Seifer Almasy

Main Page: Seifer Almasy

Seifer is the eighteen year old antagonist of Final Fantasy VIII, and Squall Leonhart's rival. He, like Squall, was also enrolled into Balamb Garden at a young age and is slated to be a gunblade specialist. Seifer is more favored by the Garden Faculty in that he is perceived to be more adept at using the gunblade, and also seems to be a fast learner. This has elevated him to the status of head of the Disciplinary Committee and has also consequently given him quite a big ego. Seifer does not believe that Squall is his equal and will try to bring him down at any given point. Seifer is actually the man that gave Squall his scar, which resulted in an opposte matching one, from retaliation. He has taken the SeeD exam on a number of occassions, always falling short due to his hot temper and inability to strategise before action. Headmaster Cid has a lot of faith in Seifer's abilities, however he always seems to not be able to follow direction. Seifer almost never thinks about the consequences of his actions and this always lands him in trouble. He instigates the confrontation between X-ATM092 and the party by taking them up to the Dollet Communication Tower during the exam, despite orders against it. Seifer has a romantic dream which is later interrpreted as being a Sorceress' Knight. He is succumbed by Edea and follows her as her lapdog, playing obstacle to the party and player at many points.

Specializing in the gunblade, his abilities are rivalled only by those of Squall Leonhart although it is often expressed that Seifer may be slightly more talented.

Seifer is a young man that is hard to read. His actions never seem to have any true motivation behind them apart from antagonising his colleagues and peers. He tends find humor in snide comments that disarm other people, and can also be seen to be very obstinate in that everything has to be done his way. His true weakness though is that he really isn't as strong as he makes himself out to be, being easily persuaded to the side of the Sorceress during Edea's reign.

Seifer's Limit Break, Fire Cross consists of a move called No Mercy that is very similar to the move utilized in the introductory video. He fires off a blast of flame at the enemy before winding up to strike true with an orb of electricity and a blast of wind. The pistol part of Seifer's gunblade plays no part in his Limit Break.

Zell Dincht

Zell Dincht

Main Page: Zell Dincht

Zell is a seventeen year old fist wielding student of Balamb Garden, who joins with Squall on the SeeD exam. He is a very energetic young man who despite his fondness for hot dogs, can often be found in good shape. Slightly impulsive and overconfident, Zell usually always finds himself in situations which require the support of others to resolve. He is also often seen attempting to use brute strength to solve problems, without using his head. This behaviour leads Squall and company into a situation with the Sorceress that sends Zell into a spiral of depression.

Zell's weapon of choice is his own fists which can be very devestating to whatever is on the receiving end.

Usually found in the Cafeteria, Zell is often being advised that he's missed out on his favourite food; the hot dog. Despite not being an avid reader, Zell has also on occassion been spotted in the Library as it would appear that he has an interest in the pig-tailed librarian. Though Dincht is Zell's surname, he is not of that bloodline. Zell is one of few Balamb students that have been adopted into a local family and therefore does not have the need to remain on campus. Zell also has a distinctive tattoo on the left side of his face, inked in black.

Zell's Limit Break, Duel consists of pressing a combination of buttons in a certain order to execute various martial arts. If performed correctly, in specific order, the individual attacks can be chained up to perform a finisher that completely devestates the enemy. Duel is also timed, so there is a limit on how many skills can be used during the Limit Break. It also must be noted that once a finisher is initiated, the Limit Break ends, as that becomes the final move.

Selphie Tilmitt

Selphie Tilmitt

Main Page: Selphie Tilmitt

Selphie is a seventeen year old shinobu weilding student who transfers to Balamb Garden at the onset of Final Fantasy VIII, who is also a SeeD candidate on the SeeD exam, although a part of a squad different to the one that Squall and Zell are assigned to. Selphie meets Squall Leonhart and company when she is sent to advise of a withdrawel from Dollet when the mission is aborted due to heavy Galbadian occupation. Despite the orders she was set to deliver, she allows herself to join Squall and Zell when Seifer decides to take it upon himself to take out the Galbadians that have assaulted the Dollet Communication Tower.

Selphie's weapon of choice is a set of shinobu; or nanchaku that she weilds with procision.

She is a strong, young willful woman who likes to see the brighter side of all situations. A little impulsive with her ideas and suggestions, she has a creative and compassionate heart. When she finds out that the Garden Festival Committee has an opening, she takes it with no second thoughts and immediately sets to enlisting students to assist with the design and development of the project. Selphie can also be seen as a little clumsy as she is often seen running into others, or tripping over.

Selphie's Limit Break comprises of slots that when activated cycles through a list of magic randomly. The magic used within this Limit Break will not be drawn from her own stocked magic, and can also be used multiple times with the one draw. She also has unique magic available only to her which includes the devestating spell 'The End'.

Sorceress Ultimecia

Main Page: Ultimecia

Sorceress Ultimecia is a powerful sorceress from the future who intends to create a realm where only she can exist by means of time compression. She has the power to influence events in the past through the use of professor Odine's invention, Junction Machine-Ellone.

Ellone

Ellone was an orphan who grew up in the care of Edea along with Squall, Seifer, Zell, Irvine, Selphie and Quistis. She was the elder of the children and the others referred to her as 'sis'. Her childhood was spent in Winhill where she was raised by Raine and became fond of Laguna Loire whom she refers to as 'uncle'. Ellone was a target of Sorceress Adel and Professor Odine due to her gift of being able to see into the memories of people she has met. She was kidnapped by Esthar where she was experimented on by Odine in order to harness her power. Odine would later invent the device 'Junction Machine-Ellone' based on his research. She is rescued by Laguna Loire and placed in the care of Edea, believing her orphanage to be a safe place. Edea later developed a faction of SeeD specifically to guard her. She is responsible for the flashbacks involving Laguna in the game.

Cid Kramer

The headmaster of Balamb Garden and founder of SeeD along with Edea Kramer. Cid developed the idea of Garden and SeeD in response to discovering his wife could potentially turn into a Sorceress. Cid encountered numerous problems in gaining funding for his project and thus had to turn to Master Norg for assistance. In return Norg financed the Garden project as his partner. Cid hides the true purpose of Garden from his students, only referring to it as 'when the time comes'.

Master Norg

Master Norg, of the Shummi tribe, is the man who provided the funding for the founding of Garden and the establishment of SeeD. He is somewhat of a black sheep compared to the other Shummi. He believes himself to be of a higher authority than Headmaster Cid which leads to a full blown conflict between the two.

Xu

Xu is a senior member of SeeD and serves as an assistant to headmaster Cid. She is responsible for briefing trainee SeeD members on their missions.

Dr Kadowaki

Dr Kadowaki is the medical Doctor in charge of treating ill and injured students. She is known to be very good at the card game Triple Triad. She is found in the infirmary.

Fujin and Ragin

Together with Seifer Alamasy they make up the disciplinary committee of Balamb Garden. Ragin is a large, powerful man who wields a Bo-staff in battle. He is recognized for saying the words 'Ya Know' at the end of sentences. Fujin is Rajin's superior and a woman of few words. She restricts her speech to single words that reflect her mood, such as 'RAGE' or 'CONCERNED'. She wields a Zan in battle.

Zone and Watts

Zone and Watts are members of the Forrest Owls along with Rinoa Heartilly. Zone often gets stomach pains when nervous and Watts is the reconnaissance expert who addresses others as 'Sir'. Watts is often a comical character who is usually left behind and thus is seen chasing after trains on several occasions.

Angelo

Angelo is Rinoa Heartilly's dog and close companion. Angelo plays a part in Rinoa's limit break attacks in battle.

Julia Heartilly

Mother of Rinoa Heartilly, she is first seen in flashbacks of Laguna Loire's life playing the piano in a bar in Deling City. She married General Calloway and was killed in a car crash when her daughter was 5 years old. Her meeting with Laguna Loire inspired her to write the song 'Eyes on Me'.

General Caraway

Father of Rinoa Heartilly and head of the Galbadian military until he was ousted by Seifer Alamasy. He is responsible for ordering the assassination of Sorceress Edea for which SeeD is hired. He has a very cold relationship with his daughter, seeing her as a reckless child and not taking her ability in combat seriously.

Raine

Owner of an inn in Winhill, she nursed an injured Laguna Loire back to health. She lives with Ellone who grows fond of Laguna. Laguna and Raine grew close and, while Laguna was away searching for Ellone after her kidnapping, Raine died giving birth to a son.

Vinzer Deling

The despotic president of Deling City. He is responsible for ordering the invasion of Dollet and appointing Sorceress Edea as ambassador for the Galbadian government. He is betrayed by the Sorceress who kills him whilst addressing the people of Deling.

Biggs and Wedge

Two soldiers of the Galbadian army whose paths constantly cross with the main characters in the game. Biggs is the superior of the two in rank, beginning as a Major but losing a rank after every confrontation with SeeD. Wedge is an incompetent private. The two are often used as comic relief.

Mayor Dobe

Pacifist mayor of Fisherman's Horizon. Being the mayor of a peaceful community, he seeks to keep out all sources of trouble which causes him to be deeply skeptical about any military presence in his town, including SeeD. He is forced to concede to allow SeeD to use military force when Galbadian soldiers invade FH.

Sorceress Adel

An evil sorceress who reigned over Esthar in the past. She was embroiled in a bitter war with Galbadia and ordered the kidnapping of children all over the world in order to find a successor. She was responsible for the kidnapping of Ellone and the development of the Lunatic Pandora. Her reign was ended by Laguna Loire who devised a plan to trap Adel in the Sorceress Memorial and launch her into space. She is released from her tomb by Rinoa, under the spell of sorceress Ultimecia, and is brought back down to earth by the Lunar Cry.
