Cid Highwind is one of the main protagonists in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. He is a good-hearted Captain who sacrificed his long-awaited dream of being the first man in space to save his assistant, Shera. Cid often swears and smokes, traits uncommon to Final Fantasy protagonists. His attitude is often misleading because of his crudeness, but does display moments (in his unique way) where he deeply cares for his fellow party members and the Planet.

Upon first meeting Cid Highwind in Rocket Town, the party learns he once worked for Shinra as he tells them of his dream of being the first man in space. Cid verbally abuses his housemate, Shera, seemingly using her as the woman which he ventilates his anger on. Despite the party's sympathy, Shera tells the party how she was the cause of the failed rocket launch, leaving Cid to wait for another unlikely opportunity. She claims that because of the incident, she doesn't mind how Cid treats her. Cid joins the party after Rufus Shinra denies the space program and they make an escape on the Tiny Bronco.

Cid later steals the Highwind from Shinra, escaping from Junon. They begin a search for the missing Cloud, and upon finding him in Mideel, Cid becomes the party leader in both Cloud and Tifa's absence. Subsequently, he leads the party in the defense of Fort Condor and North Corel during Shinra’s attempts to claim the Huge Materia.

Cid gladly returns the role of leader to Cloud, claiming he was no good at keeping track of who had what materia. The party returns to Rocket Town to stop Shinra from using the rocket as a weapon against Meteor. The party gets trapped in the rocket and launched in space. Cid revels in his realization of his dream as the first man in space.

During their escape, Cid becomes trapped under the very oxygen tank that Shera had claimed was defunct. She is aboard the rocket, and enters to help release Cid and escape with the party. Despite his treatment of Shera, Cid comes to a realization that Shera most likely saved his life - not to mention the fact that he develops a sincere respect for her knowledge. He verbalizes an apology and reveals he deeply cares for her well-being despite all that has happened.

Cid is mentioned in the novella to be working on a new rocket with Shera. He invites Barret to work with him in searching for a new source of energy through the use of oil.

Cid first appears in the film to save Tifa and Denzel from the Shadow Creepers. He introduces his new airship, which he has named "Shera", and aids in the battle against Bahamut SIN. He appears with the rest of the cast at the end of the film in the church.

In this game, Cid has been appointed head of the airship division of the WRO and aids Vincent Valentine several times throughout the story through the use of his newest airship, the Shera. It is also revealed that Cid has in fact married Shera prior to the events of the game.

Cid appears in this game as a knowledgable technician that aids Sora in Gummy Ship creation and maintenance, as well as a guide in Traverse Town. He doesn't smoke in the Disney game, but instead chews a toothpick.

Cid reappears in ReCoM, telling Sora about the boss Heartless in Traverse Town.

Cid is the leader of the Restoration Comitee, using a giant computer to run the machinery necessary to rebuild. He is the creator of the MCP deletion program, which leads to a comical fight with Merlin. This is the first Kingdom Hearts title he speaks in.
