[edit] Final Fantasy VII
Upon first being introduced to Cloud, he is an ex-SOLDIER hired by Barret Wallace to help his eco-terrorist group, AVALANCHE, destroy Midgar's Sector 1 Mako Reactor. The group then rendevouzes at 7th Heaven for a meeting. When he reunites with Tifa Lockhart in her bar, she reminds him of the promise he made when they were children. Through the flashback, the player learns that Cloud lived his childhood in Nibelheim with one ambition flooding his mind: becoming a member of Shinra's SOLDIER. When old enough, Cloud set out for Midgar to become a 1st Class SOLDIER. Before leaving, he made an important promise to Tifa - he would return to rescue her if her life was ever in peril. And so Cloud agrees to continue working as a member of AVALANCHE. During the party's attempt at blowing up the Sector 5 Reactor, President Shinra unleashes Air Buster on the group. After the battle, Cloud falls from the bridge and lands in Aeris Gainsborough's church (much the same way Zack does in Crisis Core). Aeris hires Cloud as her bodyguard when the Turks arrive to capture her. After they escape, Cloud takes Aeris back home. At the request of Aeris' mother Elmyra, Cloud sneaks out in the middle of the night, but Aeris has already cut him off. She insists on taking him back to Sector 7 and on the way they rest at a playground. Aeris tells Cloud about her first boyfriend who was also a member of SOLDIER. While talking, they see that Tifa has been captured by Don Corneo's men.Cloud and Aeris follow the cart to Wall Market, and Aeris helps Cloud dress as a woman to gain entrance into Corneo's mansion. Upon finding Tifa they learn that she volunteered to come in order to find out information regarding Shinra's plans. Depending on the player's actions, Cloud may be chosen to be Corneo's "date" for the evening. During the rescue, Corneo reveals Shinra's plans to drop the Sector 7 plate to destroy AVALANCHE.
Cloud and Tifa fight their way up the pillar and escape narrowly before the plate falls. In her attempts to rescue Marlene, however, Aeris is captured by Shinra. Cloud leads the party to storm Shinra HQ. Inside, he sees the headless Jenova and meets Red XIII. The party rescues Aeris from Hojo's clutches, but is captured and imprisoned anyway. When Cloud wakes up, his prison door is open and there is a trail of blood that leads to the President's office. Inside, they find the President murdered at his own desk. When they examine the sword, Cloud recognizes it as Masamune, Sephiroth's famed sword.
The party flees successfully and splits up. When the party meets in Kalm, Cloud recounts the story of the day Nibelheim was burned. Five years prior, he was accepted into 1st Class SOLDIER following the Wutai war. Cloud made an acquaintance of Sephiroth, the most revered of SOLDIERs, while under employment for Shinra. An adamant bond and respect grew between the SOLDIERs over time and they were soon assigned a task to investigate the Mako Reactor in Nibelheim, following the mysterious spawn of monsters in the town.
Cloud and Sephiroth discovered that the experiments led by Hojo had been the source of the plague of fiends in town. Realizing Nibelheim was being annihilated around him, Cloud rushed to the Reactor where he found an injured Tifa, and fulfilled his earlier promise to her. There he discovered and entered the open Jenova door to encounter Sephiroth, who was the cause of the destruction now bombarding Nibelheim, and Jenova. Cloud attempted to stop Sephiroth from causing further havoc. However, Cloud finds that he is unable to recall the outcome of the event, but realizes that both he and Sephiroth remain alive. As a result, Cloud is insistent in hunting down Sephiroth, and the rest of the party joins his quest.
When the party reaches Nibelheim on their journey, the town seems unchanged and even Cloud's and Tifa's houses remain. The residents claim that Nibelheim was ever burnt down, nor do they recognize Cloud. The houses are filled with strangers and mysterious black-cloaked figures. When the party enters the basement of Shinra Mansion, they find Sephiroth who expects to see Cloud at the Reunion.
The party continues their journey eventually reaching the Temple of the Ancients. Inside the central chamber, they find Sephiroth who reveals his plan to summon the ultimate destructive magic, Meteor, using the Black Materia. When the Planet calls upon the Lifestream to heal its wound, Sephiroth will merge with the Lifestream, gaining the power and knowledge of the Ancients. After Cait Sith turns the temple into the Black Materia, Cloud surprisingly hands its over to Sephiroth and falls unconcious.
Aeris appears to Cloud in his dream, telling him that she will stop Sephiroth. When he wakes up, Tifa and Barret tell him that Aeris is gone and insist that he continue his journey. Cloud finds Aeris at the Forgotten Capital, praying at the central altar. Under Sephiroth's control, Cloud raises his sword to kill her, but with the aid of his friends he fights the urge. Without Cloud's willingness (in the game's most famous scene), Sephiroth drops from the ceiling impaling Aeris with his sword. Cloud is deeply affected by her death, and after the party fights Jenova LIFE, he puts her body to rest in the waters surrounding the altar.
Subsequently, Cloud realizes that he was under the control of Sephiroth and continues to pursue him. At the Northern Crater, Sephiroth reveals the truth about Cloud's memories. Although his memories of him before he was a SOLDIER were true, Cloud was never the 1st Class SOLDIER, but only a Shinra infantryman. It was Zack Fair who was the true 1st Class SOLDIER that befriended and challenged Sephiroth at the Nibelheim Reactor. Cloud traveled to the Nibelheim Investigation as one of the two guards that accompanied Sephiroth. Shameful and embarrassed about never making 1st Class SOLDIER, Cloud hid his face from Tifa under his Shinra helmet. When Sephiroth had burned the town of Nibelheim, Cloud ran to the reactor to find both Tifa and Zack seriously injured by Sephiroth. Cloud had run into the reactor, stabbing Sephiroth with Zack's Buster Sword. Sephiroth struck back at Cloud, seriously wounding him. Cloud was unwilling to give up, and threw Sephiroth into a Mako pit inside the Reactor.
When Sephiroth's terror had ceased, the Shinra Company went to the Nibelheim Reactor to investigate the damage done by Sephiroth. Professor Hojo had found the bodies of Zack and Cloud and decided to use them for experimentation under the Jenova Project. For five years, Cloud and Zack were used as lab rats by Hojo in the basement of the Shinra Mansion. The amount of Jenova and Mako injected into Cloud's body brought him into a comatose state. Zack, however, had no reaction to the cells injected into his body, and five years later he broke out of the Shinra Mansion with Cloud in tow. Before they made it into Midgar, however, Zack was shot down and killed. Cloud’s memories then joined with the stories told to him by Zack, causing Cloud to believe he was Zack and creating a "Cloud Fair" persona.
Cloud hands over the Black Materia to Sephiroth once again, and the party is forced to escape without Cloud, who falls into the Lifestream. The party reunites with him in Mideel, only to find him in a near-comatose state. Tifa stays with Cloud while the rest of the party hunt down the Huge Materia. When they return to visit, Mideel is attacked by Ultimate WEAPON and the Lifestream bursts through the ground. Tifa and Cloud fall into the Lifestream, where Tifa is able to enter Cloud's subconsious. Tifa helps Cloud piece together his proper memories to restore him to his true self. They are released from the Lifestream and Cloud apologizes to his party, but is ever determined to defeat Sephiroth. The party travels back to the Northern Crater and are forced to fight Sephiroth in his inhuman forms. Upon his defeat, Sephiroth is sent to the Lifestream where Cloud follows and finally eliminates him using Omnislash. Cloud looks up to see a hand reaching for his and he raises his hand. When Cloud returns to his conscious, he finds Tifa reaching out for him and manages to rescue her before she falls.
The party watches as Holy fights Meteor, but realize that it is too late. Aeris summons the Lifestream to fight Meteor and save the planet.

Seven years prior to the original game, Zack meets Cloud, a Shinra infantryman whose dream is to join SOLDIER. The two quickly become friends, bonding over their similar hometowns. Cloud occasionally appears throughout the game and is portrayed as an insecure and somewhat naive individual.
Cloud fails to become a member of SOLDIER, and is assigned to accompany Sephiroth and Zack to Nibelheim. Ashamed of his failure and status as a mere infantryman, Cloud wears his helmet to remain inconspicuous. Led by Tifa, the party reaches the reactor and Cloud is ordered to remain outside and keep Tifa from entering.
Later, when Sephiroth burns the town, Cloud is one of the few survivors. He rushes into the reactor to find Zack and Tifa seriously injured. Cloud takes up the Buster Sword and fights Sephiroth, only to be seriously wounded himself. Cloud collapses on the steps near Zack, and the pair are taken to Shinra Mansion’s basement to become Hojo's unwilling test subjects. Due to Cloud's weak mind, the experiments leave him in a near comatose state.
Four years later, Zack breaks out, rescuing Cloud as well (before he is assigned a clone number). Zack shares his plan with Cloud for them to become mercenaries, but during the conversation, they are attacked by Shinra troops. Being overwhelmed by Shinra's numerous forces, Zack is shot down just outside Midgar. The soldiers leave Cloud for dead, who shortly after their departure regains some awareness. He drags himself over to the dying Zack, who entrusts Cloud with the Buster Sword and his legacy. Cloud hauls the Buster Sword behind him as he heads for Midgar. (It is during the time when Cloud reaches Midgar that Tifa finds him, and Jenova reacts to her memories of Cloud and his own desires to be stronger, creating his alternate persona.) In the final scene of the game, Cloud is shown atop the Midgar train claiming to be Cloud Strife, SOLDIER 1st class.
[edit] Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile
In the novella, just after the events of the original game, Cloud, Tifa, and Barret help build the new city of Edge. They also rebuild 7th Heaven, and Cloud starts up a delivery service. Shortly thereafter, Cloud stumbles upon Denzel just outside of Aerith’s church and takes him home. He, Tifa, Denzel, and Marlene settle into a pseudo-family life, but over time Cloud becomes depressed over the deaths of Zack and Aerith. Cloud begins to stay at Aerith’s church, unbeknownst to his family.

Two years after Meteorfall, Cloud sits just outside of Midgar atop Fenrir. Shortly after a message from Tifa, he is attacked by Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo. Surviving the attack he heads to Healin Lodge to meet with Rufus Shinra, who he is surprised to see still alive and afflicted with Geostigma. Rufus requests Cloud’s help to fight the Remnants, but Cloud denies him and leaves.
When Tifa and Marlene visit Aerith's church in search of Cloud, they find that he has been living there, quietly succumbing to Geostigma. When Cloud returns to the church however, he finds Tifa near-unconscious and collapses himself under the effects of Geostigma.
He wakes up back in 7th Heaven having been rescued by Reno and Rude. After Tifa confronts Cloud about his feelings and fears, he heads to the Forgotten City to reclaim the children. Cloud fights Kadaj's gang, but is overwhelmed and must be rescued by Vincent Valentine. Vincent teaches him the truth of Geostigma and its source in Jenova cells infecting the body.
Marlene scrambles out of the bushes into Cloud's arms and she too confronts him about his actions. Reminiscing on recent events, Cloud realizes that he must forgive himself and fight Kadaj.
Cloud pulls up in front of Tifa as Bahamut SIN terrorizes the city. He banters with her about dilly-dallying, confirming that he has indeed come to terms with his past. Cloud and Tifa join the battle, successfully defeating Bahamut SIN.
During his chase of Kadaj, he is led back to Aerith's church where a healing water springs from the floor, curing Cloud of his Geostigma. When he tracks down and defeats Kadaj, the Remnant joins with Jenova's remaining cells to become Sephiroth. When Sephiroth strikes him with his blade, he asks Cloud what he cherishes most that he may have the pleasure of taking it away. Flashbacks of Aerith, Zack, and Tifa and the children flood his mind, and he manages to fight back against Sephiroth. He defeats him once again with Omnislash insisting Sephiroth remain in his memories.
After watching Kadaj being pulled into the Lifestream, Cloud is shot from behind by Yazoo. Cloud, Yazoo, and Loz collide in a fiery explosion that seemingly kills them all. In the Lifestream, Zack and Aerith tell him that he doesn’t belong there and send him back to the church, where his friends are waiting for him. Cloud helps to heal Denzel of his Geostigma. As he looks around the celebrating crowd, he finds Aerith walking out of the church. She tells him that everything will be alright before walking into the light with Zack. Cloud's final thoughts are that he knows everything will be alright because he’s not alone anymore.
