Gameplay

Crisis Core is both an role-playing and action game in which the player controls the main character Zack Fair throughout the story. While the game feels like real-time combat, it is infact turn based, however there is no ATB bar, rather turns are affected by your speed. The player chooses actions from a small menu in the corner of the screen, featuring attack, magic, special attack, and item choices. The main feature of Crisis Core battles is the DMW, a slot-machine like mechanic in the upper-left corner. Images and numbers continuously scroll, consuming SP (Solider Points). Different combinations of sevens lead to different effects, such as Endure or No MP Cost, while having identical characters in the left and right slots activates Modulating Phase. Certain combinations of characters and numbers in modulating phase will allow the player to level up the character, power up materia, or perform special moves and summons.

The player can decide whether to follow the game's storyline, or complete missions.

Battle System

Crisis Core has an action based battle system. The player (Zack Fair) runs around an enclosed area, while one to numerous enemy's travel in the area as well. The run around to avoid attacks, attack you, and if they use a spell, it will be displayed in a red bar at the top of the screen with the name in the bar.

You will have a small bar with different colored circles at the bottom right of the screen. The colors include Green, Light Green, and Yellow. Green is magic, light green is support magic, and yellow are extra commands. You use L and R to flip through the tiny circles. You can access your basic attacks, set attacks, and your items. You can set 6 magic/spells on the in game menu. You use X to activate the command your cursor is currently set on (They will have a yellow highlight around them). Whatever the cursor is on, X will activate. You lock on to the target and button mash X on your current command. Triangle is to block any oncoming attacks, and will cut the damage in half. Square can be used to evade by making Zack preform a dodge roll.
