Cyan Garamonde is one of the main playable protagonists of Final Fantasy VI. When you first meet Cyan, his home Kingdom of Doma is being attacked by the Empire. Cyan is a wise Samurai with honorable intentions for his Kingdom and enemies at the same time. During a strategy meeting, Cyan suggests that the best chance for Doma to survive the attack, is by taking out their lead Commander. Cyan leads the attack, and does so, which causes the Imperial troops to retreat to their base camp. As the Kingdom of Doma are planning their next strategy, Kefka has other intentions for them, as General Leo is away. Kefka poisons the river which runs through Doma, and kills all of Doma's inhabitants, including the King of Doma, and Cyan's wife and son, Elaine and Owain.

Cyan survives the poisoning and becomes enraged at the Empire's actions. He rushes the Empire's base camp in berserk. At the camp, he encounters Sabin and Shadow who help him get his revenge, in return for his aid to accompany them to Narshe. As Cyan, Sabin, and Shadow eliminate the Empire's base camp, they venture through a haunted forest, on their way to Narshe. Inside this forest, the three go aboard a Ghost Train, and make their way to the locomotive in an attempt to stop it. To their dismay, they got tricked into riding the train to the afterlife. After a battle, Cyan, Sabin, and Shadow manage to get off, but just as they get off, Cyan sees his wife and child go aboard it. Cyan calls out to them and attempts to get back on the train to be with them, however doesn't make it in time and he is left heart broken as he sees the train ride into the darkness.

Cyan agrees to join the Returners once they make it to Narshe, and swears revenge on Kefka for what he did to his family and Kingdom.
