Strategy
In order to get this mark to appear, you’ll have to travel by airship several times. After speaking to the Traveler, board an airship to any other location. Find him in the next aerodome, and speak to him again. Then board another airship to another location, and find the Traveler again. You’ll have to do this a couple times before Deathgaze attacks the airship you are on. Agree to go after the mark and head to the deck. Deathgaze uses Poison, Sap, and Confuse, so protect against these if you can and make sure you put the appropriate gambits at the top. Its special attacks include Crushing Fangs (which may instantly KO a character) and Fireball (which is a strong fire-based spell). Equip fire-protecting equipment if you want to take this attack out of the fight. It will also put up a physical paling which makes it immune to physical attacks, so you’ll need to bring some strong magicks to the fight. Start by using Silence on Deathgaze to avoid some of its attacks. Make sure to cast Protect and Shell on your own party members to protect against its strong attacks. He also uses Restore to gain some HP back. It may at some point use a Magick Barrier as well, in which case switch to physical attacks or technicks. When Deathgaze’s HP reaches critical, he’ll get faster, so use a Quickening chain if you have the MP to finish it off. As always keep your party members healed as best you can, and switch out if you need to.
There is another way to fight Deathgaze. You can cast Reverse on it, and once Reverse works, you can cast Renew. This will bring its HP down to one, then it just takes one hit to finish it off. You’ll have to work quickly because after you cast Reverse, Deathgaze will cast Restore on itself to remove it. You have to time the Reverse/Renew spells with two of your characters properly to avoid this.
