Luso Clemens' trouble-making ways catches up to him when he is assigned to cleaning duty in the library as punishment for his actions, shortly before summer vacation is due to begin. There he finds a mysterious old book, which proceeds to transport him into the magical world of Ivalice. Finding himself in a new world with many strange aspects in it Luso is invited by a warrior called Cid to join his clan, and so Luso's adventures in Ivalice begin.

[edit] Gameplay

The player's quest takes them to the world of Ivalice, where destinations are marked as points on a maps which players can travel to. It is important to note that the passage of time in Ivalice is marked by a calendar, which updates as players spend time travelling between destinations. As the year progresses in Ivalice, seasons change, and different quests may open or close to the player as a result.

As with FFTA for the GBA, FFTA2's party is a "clan" which players can organize and build the reputation of. This can involve engaging in the standard turn-based battles on isometric maps (fixed camera, as maps are not truly 3D in this game), to sending selected party members on errands for a set period of time. Your success in these errand missions will depend on how well suited the character and his/her class was for the chosen task!

Battle Scene.

The technical details of gameplay in FFTA2 is in keeping with previous FFT games, where the player recruits and maintains a party of characters both unique (crucial to the story) and generic (named, but still randomly generated). Character development outside of the story is handled via a "class" system which is essentially a list of fantasy-inspired professions players can have their characters undertake, each with their own unique appearance, equipment requirements and more importantly, skill sets. As characters gain experience in a given class, they will learn more and more skills both passive and active which will greatly expand their potential in battle. Gaining levels as a particular class also unlocks more powerful classes which players can take advantage of, but players must be mindful of having the equipment needed to leverage their strengths.

Shop inventories in FFTA2 do not update as players travel to new destinations. To expand the range of equipment and items, players must earn the appropriate loot from enemy monsters defeated in battle. This loot must then be sold to unlock new items to purchase; many items will require selling a combination of multiple items, encouraging the players to engage as many different monsters as possible!

Battles in FFTA2 follow the turn-based console strategy basics popularized by FFT, while also retaining elements from its more direct predecessor FFTA. Players will choose a set number of characters, including any mandatory for the battle (usually Luso) and place them at pre-determined locations on an isometric map. Maps will include varied terrain both beneficial and harmful to players and their foes; the player should use the lay of the land to their advantage.

Player characters can choose to move and use action abilities during their turn; who gets to act is determined by both Speed and what action they may have taken in the previous turn. Choosing to have characters wait will allow their turn to come up quicker, allowing the player to manipulate the acting order of their characters to a certain degree during their turn. The enemy will likely move and engage your characters during their own turn.

Winning the battle entails completing the battle objective; often this is as straightforward as defeating all enemies, but with some quests the objective may be more specific. Players can receive a boost in the form a Clan Privilege they can choose to take effect for the course of the battle for their party, but these must be earned in a variety of ways beforehand.

As in FFTA, the player must also be mindful of any Laws put into place for the battle by the mysterious Judges of Ivalice. These Laws are essentially restrictions the player may choose to follow for the course of the battle; for example, forbidding the use of a certain action ability like a specific spell. Upholding the Law will allow players to earn bonus items after winning the battle. On the other hand, players who fail to follow or ignore the Law requirement will lose the effects of the Clan Privilege for the rest of the battle, forfeit any bonus items AND are unable to revive any KO'ed characters until the battle is over. In drawn-out quest battles, these negative effects can take their toll!

  • The race of certain characters in battle is based on their jobs, so use caution when using characters like Cid (who is a Revagi but uses Bangaa jobs), and Penelo (who is a Hume but uses Viera jobs). If the law is against Viera jobs, and you use Penelo's abilities, the law is broken and the judge will abandon you.
