Gambits

Gambit System

The Gambit system is essentially a strategic combat AI built to give characters commands which engage automatically when certain triggers happen, for example, a drop of HP to a certain level would raise the priority of one action over another. To learn how to fix gambits for beginners, click here for a short guide.

This allows for a higher level of micromanagement of the party than most Final Fantasy games have attained in the past, while maintaining a safe level of simplicity.

Gambits themselves can be disabled and enabled through the click of the button. While initially with few options, your travels will lead you to merchants or to random encounters when such things as new Gambit options are available.

Gambits are listed in level of priority. The top priority always comes first, and, if the conditions to use that Gambit are incorrect, the system will default to the next gambit. While useful, this can lead to other problems. For example, having the highest priority gambit as an "Attack all Enemies" one, will cause any lower gambit to be forgotten until no more enemies are in the fight, no matter how desperately needed that Gambit may have been. Another example is setting Potions to something like &0% health to any ally during the game, which only succeeds in burning through potions.

The gambits themselves are controlled in three sections. On the far left, there is an on off button which can be toggled just by lifting them up and placing them back down. In the middle is the conditions which must be met before the Gambit can be used, such as "Any Ally >70%". The gambit section on the right is the result of successful conditions, let's say, the magik "Cure". This means that, as long as it is priority, than Gambit will be healing anyone with less than seventy percent health until they are at or above it.

However, if during combat, that character is not healing someone, it may be due to another Gambit having a higher priority. As mentioned before, if you have an All Enemies Attack function set above it as a priority, then your character will only heal allies if not enemies are within it's site. To change this, you can always switch the gambits around by lifting one and dropping it on top of the other. By doing that in this situation, the character will heal anyone below 70% health, but, if no one is below that amount, then it will attack the nearest enemy.

Some people may notice problems with the Final Fantasy XII game when it comes to trying to fix broken gambits, often resulting in characters attacking other characters. As a stop gap until you learn how to use gambits correctly, here it how to check them. One, make sure that all allies are in blue, if mentioned in gambits. Two, make sure all gambits in red are for the enemies only. Blue are friendly actions, red are offensive actions, so making that distinction early on is important.
