Hojo in DoC

Hojo is a non-playable character from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The mad scientist is the head of the Shinra Company’s Science Research Division. Final Fantasy VII

Hojo is first encountered inside Shinra Headquarters when the party arrives to rescue Aeris. Here, Hojo refers to her as a "specimen" and reveals his plan to mate her with Red XIII. The party later encounters him at Costa del Sol where he is taking a break from chasing Sephiroth. When the party catches up to him again at the Northern Crater, Hojo mistakenly refers to Cloud as a "failed experiment", surprised that Cloud is the only of Sephiroth's clones to have made it to the Reunion. Regardless, Hojo elates that his Reunion theory is proven to be true.

Prior to the events of the game, Hojo was working under Professor Gast who developed the Jenova Project. When Gast abandoned the project, Hojo was put in charge of both the division and the Project. When the party visits Icicle Inn, they learn through old videos that Hojo had come to the area shortly after Aeris’ birth. He killed Gast and kidnapped Ifalna and Aeris, though years later the two would escape his clutches.

The party finds him once again in Midgar atop the Sister Ray, which Hojo plans to use the cannon to aid Sephiroth who he reveals to be his son. He also tells the party that he has injected himself with Jenova cells and a boss battle ensues. After he is defeated, the Jenova cells tranform him into the monstrous Helletic Hojo and subsequently Lifeform Hojo. When the party defeats him in his final form, they leave his body, which is then later revisited by Vincent Valentine as shown in the opening scene of Dirge of Cerberus.

Boss Battle

Hojo is encountered as a boss in Midgar.

Strategy

You finally get a piece of Hojo. Unfortunately he fights like a mad scientist. He'll have the Bad Rap Sample and Poodler Sample to fight for him. Don't waste your time on them though because he'll just summon more in their place. Instead, use physical or magic attacks on him, and stay healed. When Hojo falls, he will turn into Helletic Hojo.

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

Zack Fair first meets Hojo when he protects him from Genesis' attack. Hojo calls Hollander a hack, claiming that he will not be able to save Genesis from deteriorating.

Cloud's defeat of Sephiroth during the incident in Nibelheim greatly intrigues Hojo, who then decides to use him and Zack in further experimentation. He uses the duo to test the Reunion theory by injecting them with S cells along with Jenova cells and mako. This effectively makes Cloud a "Sephiroth copy", allowing the events of FFVII. Zack was considered a failure, however, due to his mind’s resistance to the mako therapy.

Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus

Through Vincent's history, we learn further the events that led to Sephiroth's birth. After Lucrecia Crescent rejected Vincent due to her guilt over his father's death, she enters a relationship with Hojo, who she had been working with at the time. Hojo impregnated Lucrecia and, at her approval, Hojo used the unborn child as part of the Jenova Project. This child would later be named Sephiroth. When Vincent confronted Hojo on the matter, Hojo shot him and used his body in experimentation, thus Vincent's transformations. Hojo considered him a failed experiment, though it was Hojo's actions that created Vincent's nearly indestructible body, which was later used to play host to Chaos. Later, when Lucrecia demands to see Sephiroth, Hojo denies her. This leaves Sephiroth never knowing his true parents, being told that his mother's name was Jenova.

Although Hojo was killed in the original game, he makes a return in Dirge of Cerberus as a hollographic image that posseses the leader of Deepground, Weiss. When Vincent encounters Weiss, Hojo reveals himself. Hojo projected himself into the Worldwide Network during Meteorfall. When the network reestablished three years later, his framents joined in his Reunion. He infused himself with Weiss during an SND and took control of his mind. Hojo, needing an untained Lifestream to merge with Omega WEAPON, began collecting civilians not infected with Geostigma to create a pure mako pool. However, after Weiss is defeated by Vincent, Nero merges with Weiss, thus tainting the Lifestream and eliminating Hojo.

For the boss battle that occurs in Dirge of Cerberus, see Weiss.

Quotes

"SOLDIER's duty is not to think - it is to protect men who think for them, like me." (Crisis Core)
"I offered the woman with my child to Professor Gast's Jenova project. When Sephiroth was still in her womb, we infused him with Jenova's cells..." (FFVII)
