Lightning is the main character of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2. She wields a gunblade that transforms between an automatic weapon and a sword. She also has the ability to control some aspects of gravity using devices developed by the military. She's used "Lightning" as a pseudonym for her real name (Claire Farron) since the death of her parents.

Her sister, Serah Farron, plays a large part in the central plot. Lightning was opposed to Serah's engagement to Snow Villiers, whom she blames for what happened to Serah.

As a l'Cie, Lightning has a tattoo (near her chest, covered by her clothes). Her l'Cie summon is Odin.

Lightning's main roles are Commando, Ravager and Medic. Her weapons of choice are Gunblades.

Her appearance is that of a young female adult with reddish blonde hair and some sources suggest that Tetsuya Nomura conceived her as a supposed female version of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII.

After her disappearance, Lightning is presumed dead. However following the events of Episode i, Lightning has traveled to Valhalla, a world exempt from time. She guards the shrine of Etro.

Lightning gives Mog to Noel Kreiss and asks him to pass the moogle onto her sister Serah.
