Magic in Final Fantasy III is a very useful ally when things seem to be going wrong. Yet, magic can also be harmful to your party. So take heed of the information presented below, and make wise choices along your journey.

Magics can be given to the party by NPCs, purchased in shops, or found in boxes. Each member can only use three of each level of magic, depending on their job, and is only given a limited number of cast, depending on their job.

Most magics can target all enemies or all party members, but the effectiveness decreases when casting upon multiple targets

Black Magic

Black Magic is offensive and status-inflicting magic. It is used to cause pain to those unfortunate enough to come across it. Masters of Black Magic can deal massive amounts of damage to one enemy, or lesser amounts of damage to a whole party of enemies. Below are all the spells that wielders of Black Magic can learn, and what they do.

  • Used by: Black Mage, Red Mage, Magus, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Thundaga
      • Deals massive amounts of lightning damage
    • Raze
      • Inflicts KO status upon enemies below the caster's level
    • Erase
      • Removes beneficial magic

Level 6

  • Used by: Black Mage, Magus, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Firaga
      • Deals massive amounts of fire damage
    • Bio
      • Deals damage by rapidly mutating any bacteria attached to target
    • Warp
      • Sends target to another dimension

Level 7

  • Used by: Black Mage, Magus, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Quake
      • Deals damage by shaking the earth and the heavens
    • Breakga
      • Instantly petrifies target
    • Drain
      • Absorbs HP from target

Level 8

  • Used by: Magus, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Flare
      • Deals damage by detonating a tremendous amount of fire and energy
    • Death
      • Inflicts KO status upon target. Restores HP of undead enemies
    • Meteor
      • Rains astral bodies upon the enemy. Sometimes damage allies

White Magic

White Magic is restorative and status-curing magic, but it can also slip into the realm of offense. Masters of White Magic can not only restore huge ammounts of Health when needed, but they can be pretty harmful to undead enemies, and eventualy, enemies of the dark. Like their Black Magic wielding counterparts, their Magic can affect either one or many enemies/party members. Below are all the spells that wielders of White Magic can learn, and what they do.

  • Used By: White Mage, Devout, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Aeroga
      • Deals a great amount of wind damage
    • Stona
      • Removes petrification and gradual petrification status
    • Haste
      • Increases target's agility

Level 7

  • Used By: White Mage, Devout, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Curaja
      • Restores a massive amount of HP. Damages undead enemies
    • Esuna
      • Removes all status ailments except for KO
    • Reflect
      • Creates a magic-reflecting barrier that sends spells back at the caster

Level 8

  • Used By: Devout, Sage, Onion Knight
    • Tornado
      • Reduces an enemy's HP to one digit
    • Arise
      • Revives an ally from KO status with full HP
    • Holy
      • Smites an enemy with divine light
