What is Materia?

Materia is simply put magic, Spells that you can cast on yourself or enemies to support yourself in battle. How materia came to be is another question.
The following text is taken from the game script so that you can read what Sephiroth
explains what Materia is in a conversation with Cloud and Tifa:

Cloud: What's this?

Tifa: A mysteriously colored cave...

Sephiroth: It must be the Mako energy. This fountain is especially abundant in
it. That's why the Mako Reactor was built here.

Then in the bizarre area...

Cloud: ...And what's this?

Sephiroth: A Mako fountain. It's a miracle of nature.

Tifa: It's so beautiful... If the Mako Reactor continues to suck up the energy,
this fountain will dry up too...

Sephiroth: Materia. When you condense Mako energy, materia is produced. It's
very rare to be able to see materia in its natural state.

Cloud: By the way... Why is it that when you use materia you can also use magic
too?

Sephiroth: You were in SOLDIER and didn't even know that? ...the knowledge and
wisdom of the Ancients is held in the materia. Anyone with this knowledge can
freely use the powers of the Land and the Planet. That knowledge interacts
between ourselves
and the planet calling up magic...... or so they say.

Cloud: Magic...... a mysterious power...

Sephiroth: Ha, ha, ha!

Cloud: Did I say something funny?

Sephiroth: A man once told me never to use an unscientific term such as
mysterious power! It shouldn't even be called 'magic'! I still remember how
angry he was.

5 colour groups of Materia

There are 5 groups of materia. Magic - green, Command - yellow, Support - blue, Summon - red and finally Independent materia - purple.
All of these have their own purpose. The most popular ones would be magic which traditionally casts elemental spells such as Cure, Heal, Fire, Ice, Lightning etc.
Summon materia is used to call forth creatures (which are often inspired from popular myths) who has their own special ability to support you in battle.
Command materia gives you special abilities such as manipulate all normal enemies and to learn several of the enemies spells. With Support materia, you can link it with other materia such as Magic to increase or change it to your battling prefrence. There are countless combos you can use
here, so experiment and find out what works for you.
Independent materria has no commands, but takes effect from the moment you equip it, It only changes your stats.

Slots and AP

You equip your materia on your weapon and accessories. There are max 8 slots where you can fit materia into it's slots, of course depending on the weapon/accessory; Which means you are able to equip a total of 16 materias at a time.
Take note that some slots are connected/paired and there are some that are single.
The difference; With single materia slots you can't give that selected materia any boost by combining it with Support Materia. For instance, if you combine Restore materia and All (Support materia) together in 2 slots which are connected, then you can cast cure on all of your party members.
NB; For the mentioned combination, there is a limited times per battle you can cast it. It depends on how much AP [exp for materia] the All materia has.
AP is gained from each battle you win. All of the players who were in the battle (and not KO'd) get full AP exp, while those you haven't equipped, or on other characters will get no AP for their materia.

Take note of what it says under the slots:
None - Normal - Double - Triple
these tell you how much AP you will gain after a battle.
If it says "none", you will then get absolutely no AP for you materia.
If it says "normal", you will get the amount of AP it says when you finish a battle.
If it says "double", you will gain the double amount of AP it says when you finish a battle.
If it says "triple", you gain the triple amount of AP it says when you finish a battle.
Like the slots, these features will change depending which weapon or Accessory you are equipped with.

Leveling Materia

After finishing a number a battles, you will suddenly notice a pop up telling you about your materia growth. All of the materia worn will grow as it gains AP (materia experience). You start out with level 1 materia e.g. 1 star to the max level of 5 stars.
Each star that's filled will have a impact on your stat's depending which materia it is, so keep a eye on it so that you may or may not be pleasantly surprised.
But when it comes to magic materia, the strength of the magic will increase with each level. E.g. if you have Cure, and it goes to a new level, it will say Cure2. It heals your party much more than a regular Cure spell. NB. MP cost goes up for each spell level.
To check full information about yout materia (from which new spell has been made for you to use, or how much AP you need to level up + Stat effects), go check on your magic in the menu. The spells that are lighted up is yours to use, but the dark ones you need more AP for. It will also say how far you are away from the next magic level
