Midgar is a main city in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. In Final Fantasy VII, Midgar is the technological center of the Planet, located to the west on the easternmost continent. The city is split by a giant plate into upper and lower sections. Above the plate are the most powerful and richest residents of the city, and the location of headquarters of the Shinra Company. Below the plate are the Slums, where the poorer inhabitants make their homes. The plate above the Slums prevents any light from getting through, making the Slums dark and dismal. Most homes are made from junk found in the area, the only exception being Aerith's church, which seems to be the only original building that has survived the construction of the plate.
Midgar is divided further into sections called "Sectors" and assigned numbers 1-8 with Sector 0 at the center. It is said that prior to the construction of the plate, each of these Sectors had names, but they have long since been forgotten. The Sectors are divided by walls, making travel within the city difficult. There is a rail system that circles the outside of the city as means of transportation between the upper and lower plates. Sectors 1-8 each house a Mako Reactor.
In FFVII, the game starts in Midgar aboard the train, whereby the members of AVALANCHE are on a mission to blow up the Mako Reactor in Sector 1. Ultimately, as a result of Meteorfall, Midgar is completely destroyed. At the end of the game, a special scene shows Midgar 500 years after the events of the game. The city is in ruins and overrun by vegetation.
In Crisis Core, Midgar is the central location. As a member of SOLDIER, Zack Fair spends much of his time at Shinra Headquarters between missions. Midgar is much the same in this game as it was in the original, with the only difference being that Midgar has developed more in the four years between the games.
In Advent Children, the opening scene is the same as the ending scene to FFVII, where Midgar is shown in ruins. It is also indicated that much of the residents of Midgar have moved to the new city of Edge. The ruins of Midgar later serve as a battlefield for Cloud and Sephiroth.
In Dirge of Cerberus, while Midgar is still in ruins, it is revealed that below the city, President Shinra had been working on a secret project to further enhance SOLDIER members called Deepground. The ruins serve as a battleground for the ground assault on Midgar led by the former members of AVALANCHE.

[edit] Sector 5
Sector 5 is the location of Aerith and Elmyra Gainsborough's home. However, Sector 5's greatest attraction is Aerith's church, the only place where flowers grow in Midgar. This is the place where both Zack and Cloud meet Aerith for the first time. It remains much the same despite Meteorfall. In Advent Children, Cloud has been living at the church and Tifa battles Loz while waiting for Cloud to return. At the end, the church becomes flooded with water able to cure Geostigma.

[edit] Sector 6
Sector 6 is home to Wall Market, a great center for shopping. It is here that Zack purchased Aerith the pink ribbon for her hair. It is also the home of the crime boss Don Corneo, where Cloud must enter dressed as a woman to rescue Tifa. Honeybee Inn is also located in Wall Market. It is a members-only adult club where (depending on the player's actions) Cloud meets Mukki. There is also a small playground that separates Sector 6 and 7.

[edit] Sector 7
Besides the average shops, Sector 7 is the location of Tifa's bar, 7th Heaven, which dually serves as the base of AVALANCHE. Sector 7 is destroyed early in the game when Shinra drops the plate on top of it. In On the Way to a Smile, it is revealed that Sector 7 was also the birthplace of Denzel. In Dirge of Cerberus, Vincent Valentine must battle through the ruins of Sector 7 to reach the old Shinra HQ.

[edit] Sector 8
In the opening FMV of the original game, this is where Aerith is seen selling flowers, and where Cloud first bumps into her. Later, when the party parachutes into Midgar, they land in Sector 8. This sector is largely explored above the plate in Crisis Core. It is portrayed as an entertainment center, holding plays of LOVELESS. At the center is a fountain plaza. In the opening flashback FMV of Dirge of Cerberus, Yuffie Kisaragi and Vincent Valentine assist in evacuating Sector 8 prior to Meteorfall, and Vincent attempts to ensure the death of Hojo.
[edit] Shinra Headquarters
Shinra Headquarters is located at the center of Midgar atop the plate in Sector 0. The building is made up of seventy floors, the top ten being restricted access. It also has a basement that is explored in missions in Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus. The ground floor serves as a lobby with a receptionist desk. Displaying some of Shinra's models for transportation is the Exhibition Room. There is also a secret entrance to Deepground here as explored in Dirge of Cerberus. The 49th floor is a key location in Crisis Core, and is labeled the SOLDIER floor. There is a holographic simulator which serves as a training room and a lounge. The SOLDIER director’s office is located on the 51st floor, and is only accessible to SOLDIER 1st classes. On Floor 62, you can find the Shinra research library and the office of Mayor Domino. The Shinra executive offices and a board room are located on the 66th floor. Floors 67 and 68 are the heart of the science department, the central location for all experiments done by Hojo. This is where Jenova's headless body is kept after the Nibelheim incident, until it is stolen. Finally at the top of the building on Floor 70 is the President’s office. Shinra Headquarters is eventually destroyed, leaving only its shell, after Meteorfall.
