- Commandos (COM) build chains with enhanced strength.
- Ravagers (RAV) charge an enemy's Stagger gauge with concentrated attack.
- Medics (MED) heal party members' HP. They do not attack.
- Sentinels (SEN) are tanks that raises the party's defenses.
- Saboteurs (SAB) can cast stat decreasing affects on enemies and debuff them.
- Synergists (SYN) can buff up the party with positive status effects.
There are paradigm sets based on two- or three-character parties. They can be customized to suit the individual player's strategy. A maximum of six paradigms (called a "deck") can be customized and utilized at any one time. By accessing the main menu, the player can change the paradigm deck by altering the paradigms and roles of the characters. It is also possible to rearrange the order of the paradigms in the deck, and establish which paradigm is default at the beginning of battles.

 General Strategies
Combining Ravagers will quickly fill an enemy's chain gauge and Stagger them. This is particularly useful on larger foes with high HP. Once a character learns Launch (COM), this becomes an effective strategy to swiftly take down an enemy without taking much damage. Relentless Assault is the best paradigm for this strategy.
For paradigms that have more than one Commando, each COM will attack its own enemy. This can be useful against groups of weaker enemies, but make it difficult to take down strong enemies in groups of two or more.
Having more than one Sentinel in a party is generally ineffective as only one SEN is needed at a time to draw enemy aggression. The only time having more than one SEN could be effective is in cases of dealing with large enemies or bosses. Right before a devastating area attack, a quick switch to a paradigm with more than one SEN can help limit the amount of damage the party takes.
If a party is in need of a quick healing, any paradigm that utilizes two MEDs can recover the party quickly. In a dire emergency, the Combat Clinic paradigm is especially useful – the SEN will draw attacks while the MEDs heal. While Salvation may see little use, three MEDs can quickly restore a weak and status-ailed party.
Setting up a paradigm deck is important. It is advisable to place the preferred healing paradigm in a spot (usually the top or bottom) where it can be easily accessed during battle without having to search for it.
