Red XIII, or Nanaki, is one of the main protagonists of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. He is a beast with fire-red fur that has spent several of the recent years of his life as a specimen in Hojo's lab until freed by the members of AVALANCHE. His true name is Nanaki, but is called "Red XIII" by Hojo, and tattooed as such. Nomura has stated that it is expensive and time consuming to animate his fur, granting him few appearences in the movie and games.

Final Fantasy VII
When the party first enters Shinra HQ in search of Aeris, they first come across Red XIII who is labeled as a specimen. Hojo reveals that he plans to mate Red XIII and Aeris to preserve both of their species. Upon freeing Aeris and Red XIII, they are surprised to learn that he is an intelligent creature capable of speech and higher thought. He tells the party that Red XIII is not his real name, only a moniker given to him by Hojo. He also agrees to accompany the party, but only as far as Cosmo Canyon.
Upon arriving in Cosmo Canyon, the party learns from Bugenhagen, Red XIII's adoptive grandfather, that Red XIII's real name is Nanaki. He also points out that even though Red XIII is 48 years in age, it is the equivalent to only 16 or 17 years old in human age. Red XIII remarks about his father, Seto, being a coward, leaving the people and his mother to die in the war. When Bugenhagen hears this, he insists that Red XIII escort him through the Cave of the Gi.
While traveling in the cave, Bugenhagen teaches the party of the war between the tribes of Cosmo Canyon and the Gi Tribe. He explains that many of the ghosts of the Gi remain in the cave due to their strong anger toward the people of Cosmo Canyon.
After defeating Gi Nattak, the party exits the other side of the cave. Up on a nearby cliff stands a petrified Seto. Bugenhagen tells Red XIII of how his father confronted the Gi Tribe alone to protect the canyon, but the poisoned arrows had turned his body to stone. Upon learning this, Red XIII fills with pride at being the son of Seto and swears to carry on his good name. When Red XIII howls toward the moon, a single tear falls from Seto's stone cheek.
Red XIII continues to travel with the party and upon their return to Cosmo Canyon after the visit to the Forgotten Capital, he learns that Bugenhagen has fallen ill. Bugenhagen, just before passing away, advises Red XIII to continue the journey and learn all that the Planet has to offer.
The final scene of the game is an FMV which depicts 500 years after the events of the game. Red XIII is shown running with two cubs. They jump up the cliff that looks over a Midgar that has become overgrown with vegetation, and Red XIII lets out a vast roar.
Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile
Red XIII is the focus of Case of Nanaki. He resolves to travel the Planet like he promised his grandfather. After rescuing a boy from a bear, he raises the two cubs. Red XIII contemplates being a part of the beast world and a part of the human world throughout the story.
Red XIII is also mentioned in Case of Barret, but only in passing by Cid as having visited him often.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
The opening scene of the film is the CG equivalent of the final scene of the original game where Red XIII stands over the ruined Midgar with two cubs.
In present day, Red XIII joins the rest of the original party in their fight against Bahamut SIN. He is depicted throughout the film with Cait Sith riding on his back. Red XIII is pictured at the end of the film with the rest of the cast where he says his only line of the film: "There are still children with the stigma."
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Red XIII only appears briefly in the closing scenes of the game sitting next to Shelke outside of 7th Heaven.
