[edit] Final Fantasy VII
When Cloud Strife and his party are freed from prison, they make their way to President Shinra's office, only to find him murdered. Upon seeing the Masamune sword still in his body, Cloud concludes that Sephiroth, who was believed to be dead, must still be alive.
Cloud later recounts his tale of the events of Nibelheim that took place five years prior. During Cloud's flashback, Sephiroth is a guest party member. Cloud and Sephiroth had gone to Nibelheim during an investigation, and found Jenova. Sephiroth locked himself away in the basement of the Shinra Mansion, studying the research notes left behind. He eventually learned of his connection with the alien Jenova and fell into madness, and a profound hatred for humanity itself was born within him. Sephiroth burned Nibelheim and returned to the Mako Reactor. There he stole Jenova's head, and engaged in a battle with Cloud. However, Cloud is unable to recall the outcome of the confrontation.
The party first encounters Sephiroth on Shinra's boat to Costa del Sol. Unbeknownst to them however, this is not Sephiroth, but rather Sephiroth controlling the body of Jenova. Before becoming Jenova BIRTH, he hints at the Reunion.
When the party finally arrives in Nibelheim, they find Sephiroth once again in the Shinra Mansion basement where he invites Cloud to the Reunion. He also claims to be the "chosen one", believing he is a descendent of the Ancients destined to rule the Planet.
The party eventually learns that he is seeking the Black Materia at the Temple of the Ancients, and head there to impede him. There, Sephiroth teaches them of Meteor, the ultimate destructive magic. He tells them his plans to summon it, causing a great wound to the Planet. There the Lifestream will gather and he will merge with it, becoming god-like. After the Temple is turned into the Black Materia, Cloud, under Sephiroth's control, hands it over to Sephiroth and passes out.
Meanwhile, Aeris travels to the Forgotten Capital, where she seeks a means to stop Sephiroth. When Cloud and the rest of the party arrive, they find Aeris praying on the central altar. Cloud, again under Sephiroth's control, raises his sword to strike Aeris. However, with the help of his friends, Cloud breaks free from Sephiroth's control. Without Cloud as his puppet, Sephiroth descends from the ceiling and runs his sword through Aeris, killing her.
When the party reaches the Northern Crater, they find Sephiroth in his true form encased in mako. Cloud learns the truth of his memories, and his mind, in its weakened state, allows him to be easily controlled by Sephiroth. He once again unwillingly relinquishes the Black Materia to Sephiroth, who then successfully summons Meteor and establishes an energy barrier around the crater.
Should the player choose to visit the Crystal Cave with Vincent Valentine in the party, they will learn that Sephiroth's true mother is Lucrecia Crescent, who had visions of her son's madness and encased herself in mako crystals. During the boss fight with Hojo, the player may also learn that Hojo is Sephiroth's biological father if Vincent is in the party.
The party eventually returns to the Forgotten Capital with Bugenhagen where they learn that Aeris had indeed summoned Holy, but Sephiroth is holding back its power. Rufus uses the Sister Ray to destroy the barrier, allowing Cloud's party passage back into the Northern Crater. There, the party engages Sephiroth, who has already begun transformation into his god-like form, in battle. They defeat him, and Cloud is pulled into the Lifestream for a final showdown with Sephiroth. Using Omnislash, Cloud finally defeats Sephiroth.
Upon Sephiroth's defeat, Holy is released, but is too late to stop Meteor. Aeris then summons the Lifestream to successfully destroy Meteor and save the Planet.
[edit] Boss Battle
Sehpiroth is fought at the end of the game. For information on the battles, see Bizarro Sephiroth or Safer Sephiroth. His normal form is the final battle of the game. He does have stats, but Cloud's has the ability to use Omnislash. Using anything other than Omnislash will cause Sephiroth to counterattack and kill Cloud.

At the beginning of this game, the Wutai war is coming to an end and Sephiroth has already achieved worldwide fame as an exceptional member of SOLDIER and a hero. Like many young men, Zack Fair joined SOLDIER to achieve similar fame, regarding Sephiroth as his own hero.
Zack is paired several times with Sephiroth after Zack's promotion to 1st class. During one investigation, Sephiroth flashes back to a time when he, Angeal Hewley, and Genesis Rhapsados were relaxing in the training center. Sephiroth proved to be beyond the power of his friends, effortlessly taking on Genesis. When Genesis is hurt, Sephiroth isn't allowed to offer his blood for transfusion, not understanding the reason. Sephiroth even hints that he may leave Shinra, particularly since his recent missions have been to track down his missing friends.
Sephiroth is eventually assigned to investigate the Nibelheim reactor along with Zack and Cloud. There is finds pods with monsters and a secret chamber labeled "Jenova". Upon learning that the monsters and Jenova, who he was told was his mother, Sephiroth becomes distraught, slashing his blade at the pods. Genesis appears to tell Sephiroth that he, too, was a part of the Jenova Project. Genesis tries to recruit him for his cause, but Sephiroth denies him. Still troubled by these newfound facts, Sephiroth locks himself in the basement of the Shinra Mansion to study the research left behind.
Just as in the original, when Sephiroth finally emerges, he burns Nibelheim and heads to the reactor. Tifa, who had taken up the Masamune for revenge, is struck down easily by Sephiroth. When Zack arrives, he battles Sephiroth, but is eventually defeated. Cloud arrives shortly after to take up the Buster Sword and impale Sephiroth as he speaks to Jenova. Cloud leaves him, and Sephiroth, who is largely unaffected by the wound, removes Jenova's head. As he tries to leave, Cloud engages him in battle. In different versions, either Cloud throws Sephiroth into the mako pool below or Sephiroth jumps in.
Shinra would later cover up the incident, rebuilding Nibelheim and sealing Sephiroth's records.
[edit] Boss Battle
The first boss fight against Sephiroth is in Chapter 8 in the Nibelheim Reactor. After his HP is depleted, the boss fight moves to a narrow walkway. He also shows up in Missions 5-2-1 and 5-2-2.

STRATEGY
At the start of the battle, start slashing away at Sephiroth. Hit him with your strongest attacks and materia. Sephiroth will attack will his Masamune, but it won't do too much damage. Sephiroth's Octaslash is what will do the damage against Zack. Zack may be able to deflect some of the blows, but not all of them. Keep your HP up and have a Phoenix Down ready just in case. When you defeat Sephiroth, the floor will break and you'll both fall to a narrow walkway above the reactor. In this second encounter, Sephiroth will attempt to push Zack backward off the edge of the walkway. Don't strike at Sephiroth with your sword because deflected attacks will just cause Zack to get pushed back more. Throw some Hell Thundaga or other strong magic attacks at Sephiroth and hope for a Limit Break. Keep Zack's HP up and this battle shouldn't take too long.

Two years following the original, Cloud has been afflicted with Geostigma, causing him to have occasional flashbacks of Sephiroth. Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo are all Remnants of Sephiroth, similar to the clones seen in the original game. During Kadaj's initial conversation with Rufus Shinra, he reveals that by reuniting with Jenova's remaining cells, Sephiroth will use his body to return.
When Kadaj finally does absorb the Jenova cells, Sephiroth emerges to battle Cloud. Sephiroth reveals that he will use the Geostigma-infected people to control the Planet. Then he will use the Planet to traverse the universe in search of a new Planet to control.
During the battle between Cloud and Sephiroth, Cloud is obviously exerting effort whereas Sephiroth is not, leading the viewer to believe that he is not using his full strength. Sephiroth is eventually defeated, however, when Cloud uses Omislash Version 5. Sephiroth reveals his single black wing claiming that he will never be a memory before dissipating, leaving Kadaj behind.

Though Sephiroth does not appear in the game, his origins are further explored through Vincent Valentine's flashbacks. Sephiroth's biological mother, Lucrecia, became impregnated by Hojo. They then agreed to use the unborn child in the Jenova Project, injecting the fetus directly with Jenova cells. Lucrecia later has visions of Sephiroth's future destruction. Soon after, Sephiroth is born and Lucrecia, eventually coming to regret her decision, demands to see her son only to be denied by Hojo.

[edit] Kingdom Hearts
Sephiroth is an always avaliable opponent in Kingdom Hearts at Olympus (one must only fight him once though). During the Platinum Match his theme music from FFVII can be heard, as well as his first spoken lines (voiced by singer Lance Bass), but these are battle lines, and not in an official cutscene. In Final Mix he fights Cloud in the sense that he is the darkness in Cloud's heart, not to save the world.
[edit] Kingdom Hearts II
Sephiroth is only fought once in Kingdom Hearts 2, where he reprises his role as Cloud's darkness. The same elements remain from the KH fight, only One Winged Angel is in its modern form, as is his voice actor (George Newbern). After being defeated by Sora, whom he sends to find Cloud, he duels Cloud and Tifa (Tifa came as Cloud's unwelcome back up) and teleports off with Cloud after Tifa threatens his control over Cloud.
[edit] Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring
Sephiroth is a playable character in Ehrgeiz, along with Cloud and Tifa.
[edit] LittleBigPlanet 2
A Sephiroth costume was released as downloadable content for LittleBigPlanet 2 on July 13, 2011.
