Setzer Gabbiani is one of the main playable characters of Final Fantasy VI. Setzer is a Gambler and Pilot at the same time. In his younger years, he fell in love with a woman named Darill. Both were expert pilots and would race around the world frequently in an attempt to see who the better captain is. Setzer pilots The BlackJack, and Darill piloted The Falcon. One day, Darill gave Setzer permission to take her airship should anything happen to her. Darill knew the risks that both her and Setzer were taking while flying, and that anything could happen at any point that would result in their demise. After racing one day, Darill decided to take the Falcon for a flight by herself and see what she can really do. Darill pushed The Falcon to it's limits and eventually crashed. When Setzer found out, he rushed to the scene quickly, and buried Darill and The Falcon in an undersea passage he created in the location of the crash.

After the death of his first love, Setzer becomes depressed but his eyes are caught by the talented Maria, a famous Opera Singer. Setzer becomes infatuated with her to the point that he arrogantly sends a letter to the Opera House stating that he will kidnap her in one of her acts. Fortunate timing however, allow Locke and Celes to trick Setzer, and Celes manages to make her way onboard Setzer's ship where they can negotiate for his services and his Airship. Locke and the Returners needed an Airship in order to reach the Southern Continent and rescue Maduin and the other Espers from Vector. Setzer isn't impressed and Celes makes him a deal with the help of Edgar's 2-sided coin. She wagers him herself, for his services. Should she lose, she would become his wife, however should she win the coin toss, Setzer has to help them. Setzer agrees but notices the fact that it's a 2 sided coin. Instead of getting angry at Celes however, he becomes impressed with her wit and agrees to help them out regardless.

Setzer has the most customizable options as a character. He can equip most heavy armors, however his weapons consist of Cards, Darts, and Dice. The Fixed Dice are his best weapon, and can be obtained in the first level of Kefka's Tower as soon as you get Setzer back on your team in the World of Ruin. His Slots ability, have a reel in which icons can be stopped in the middle. Depending on what 3 icons you align, that's the attack Setzer will use. Setzer shines in the fact that if you align 3, 7's in a row, his Joker Doom activates which kills any enemy on screen, including bosses, 100% of the time. His Fixed Dice also cause random damage at all times ranging between, 1-9999 damage, making him a powerhouse.

Setzer is a Struggle Opponent, often followed by scores of fans. Nomura was uncomfortable with using a character he did not design, but creators deemed that Setzer would be the perfect opponent because of his vain nature.
