Summons are various creatures that can be called into battle to aid the party. Throughout the entire Final Fantasy franchise there have been a few things that have carried over from one game to the next, and one of the biggest things to carry over for most of the games are the Summons. They've appeared in the games under one name or another such as being called Aeons in FFX and Guardian Forces in FFVIII, however they're as part of the Final Fantasy franchise as is Cid or the chocobo.
