You never know if you're going to croak.

Heed the words of the villagers
Some villagers provide useful information that just might come in handy later on in the game, or save you a few quick bucks. So speak to everyone you meet, even the few people that join your party.

Tricks

Free Mini/Toad spells
In the healing spring just north of the Gnome Village, You will find a gnome that gives you the 'Mini' spell, should it already be taught to one of your party members. Teach the spell that the gnome just gave to you to one of your party members, then talk to him again, and he'll give you another 'Mini' spell. Keep repeating this until all four members know Mini. So in total, you will have 5 'Mini' Spells.

Note: The same trick can be done to the gulgan that gives you the spell, Toad. He is located in the Gulgan Gulch just northwest of Castle Argus.

Free Gnomish Bread

When you clear the Nepto temple and obtain the Enterprise, a glorious sea ship, you will be able to access the Village of Ancients. You stop on the land with the small town of Tokkul near the sea. From there, you go west, across the desert, and through a narrow part of land. Soon, you'll come to a forest with a large amount of trees on the outside, and a small forest in the middle, which are the Chocobo woods. The town next to the two forest is the Village of Ancients. Once there, go up the two flights of steps, and then talk to the little boy who is hiding in a sort of crevice. He will say he'll give you a prize if you ride around the edge of the continent on a chocobo. Go to the Chocobo woods east of the village and catch a chocobo. You can't encounter enemies while on a chocobo, so it should be easy to complete the boys request. Once you do, return to the village and speak with him, He'll give you some gnomish bread. If you talk to him again he'll say, once again, that he'll give you a prize if you run around the edge of the continent on a chocobo. The prize is the same, Gnomish bread.
