Trance (FFIX)
From Final Fantasy - Wiki on Neoseeker
Trance is the limit system for Final Fantasy IX. It fills up VERY slowly, and is slightly different then other Final Fantasys. To fill your Trance you must take damage, or deal it. The more damage taken or dealt will result in a bigger portion filled. Your character automatically goes into Trance once the bar is filled, and will remain like that until the battle is done or 3 times have passed. Characters usually get a new action in Trance, as well as some cool new gear.

Zidane
In Zidane's trances he can "Dyne" to inflict damage on all or 1 enemy. To get his trances you must first learn a certain ability. (Theivery to Grand Lethal for example.) They deal a lot later in the game, making it pretty worth while.
Vivi
Vivi's trance is pretty cool. Focus works two times as well, and he can casts two black magics per turn. If you Focus two of his Trance turns, and then use Double BM, you'll have some nice damage.
Garnet
Garnet's summon option is changed into Eidolion. By using this, Summons will have a FA and will do a lot more damage. The only other way to do a FA is through Boost, which isn't available early. Definitely worthwhile.
Steiner
While in trance, Steiner will have much more attack power. Although no new attacks are available, later in the game, in trance, his attacks are deadly. Novelty wears off once he can hit 9999 normally though...
Eiko Carol
Eiko's trance is just like Vivi's. She can cast two white magic spells in a row. Useful for saving your butt from ailments, recovering HP or damage with Holy. Eiko's Speed and magic increases in this state.
Quina
Once Quina is in the trance mode, the option "eat" disappears and you'll notice a new option will be available; cook. Cook allows you to eat monsters that are not so weakened yet. You eat them at 1/4 of their health instead of 1/8.
Freya
Freya's trance is pretty good. She gets a nice boost in all stats, and her Jump ability is improved. She now jumps in the air longer and shoots down spears each turn. Damage isn't great, but she is safe in it.
Amarant
Arguably the best trance in FFIX. Amarant receives a moderate stat boost for every stat and his Chalkra becomes much stronger, causing him to deal more damage, heal more or have a better chance of inflicting an ailment. (This varies on the move used).
