Ultros is one of the minor antagonists of Final Fantasy VI. Ultros is your stereotypical wannabe villain. He is first encountered on the Lethe River as Terra, Sabin, Edgar, and Banon make their way towards Narshe in order to prevent the Empire from getting their hands on the Frozen Esper. Ultros comes from a long line of octopus royalty, or so he claims, and has a soft spot for females. Due to his battle tactics, Sabin is separated from the group for attempting to jump into the river after him in order to finish him off. Ultros manages to escape the close call with the Returners, and retreats.
He is then encountered again at the Opera House during Celes' performance. Ultros plans to sabotage the play, therefore ruining any chance the Returners have to meet Setzer, by dropping a 5 ton weight onto Celes from the roof. Locke manages to locate and stop Ultros before he pushes the weight down, and forces Ultros to retreat once more.
The third encounter with Ultros is at the Esper Gathering Place when Terra is delivering the treaty note. Ultros obtains the key that revives the Warring Triads and claims that he must make it to them before his rival, Ziegfried, does. During battle, Relm appears, surprising the party, and tricks Ultros into letting her draw him a portrait, which enables her special ability, Draw. Relm takes over Ultros, and panicking, he sets for another escape, leaving behind the key to the Warring Triads.
The fourth and final time you encounter Ultros, he has Typhoon by his side, as the Returners make their way towards the Floating Continent. After he is defeated, Typhoon comically sneezes them off the Airship and he is not to be seen again until after Kefka's apocalypse. Ultros loses his animosity towards the Returners in the larger scheme of things, with Kefka as a self proclaimed God, and ends up working at the Colosseum, registering warriors for matches and taking bets.
