Plot (Grimoire of the Rift)

The game begins as Luso Clemens' summer vacation is about to start and he writes down his goals for the summer. As soon as the bell rings, Luso dashes for the door but is stopped by his teacher, Mr. Blair, and is told to go and clean the library as punishment for his repeated tardiness. He reluctantly follows his teacher's instruction and heads for the library to meet Mr. Randell, only to be greeted by an empty room. He plays the music box lying on top of the table and spots an old book beside it. He scans through the pages but notices that the book's pages are incomplete, so he jumps to the last page and proceeds to write on it when he reads "One is fated to fill these barren pages. Know you his name?" The pages of the book flip wildly and a mysterious light appears from it, and the surrounding abruptly changes.

Luso suddenly finds himself in the middle of an encounter between a gigantic avian creature and Cid and company. He offers to protect Luso and asks him to join their clan, to which he agreed and then proceeds to join the fight. After a few turns, Klesta flees the battlefield and the party decides to return to Wood Village to rest, with Luso in tow. Luso explains his situation until he arrived in the fight with Klesta while the other members of the clan arrive. He asks Cid if he knows of a way to go back to his own world, and though the latter is just as clueless as he is, still offers to help him. He introduces himself to the other members, quickly establishes himself within the clan and they spend the rest of the day celebrating Luso's welcoming party.
Cid explains to Luso the use of pubs and immediately asks him to find a quest that will help with his training. Luso accepts a quest where it requires them to chase off wolves and they head for the chocobo ranch with haste. After they successfully take care of the fanged beasts, Luso and Cid have a conversation about the magick book and the latter takes note of a journal the boy is carrying, which completely went unnoticed until it was mentioned by Cid. Luso realizes that the book somehow records the events that's been happening around him since the fateful day at the library and that it may serve as the key to his way back home. Ecstatic at this new found discovery, the two head back to the pub in hopes of finding someone who might know more about the journal. There, they hear a conversation about the highroad connecting to Camoa being taken over by bandits, and Luso suggested to turn them in so they could head to Camoa to find information regarding the journal. The two head to Traveler's Way only to be greeted by the band known as the Yellow Wings and after a little confrontation, Clan Gully manages to imprison them menaces and then heads for Camoa.
In Camoa, they meet Ribs, a streetear acquaintance of Cid, who they ask for information regarding wizards. The seeq offered details in exchange for a tomato stalk from a Deadly Nightshade, and implored the two to visit the pub for the request. They arrive at Adventurer's Rest to find a cluster of Deadly Nightshades and, to Cid's excitement, an Alraune, the drill of which is said to sell for a hefty price. Their conversation is cut off when a girl suddenly appears and offers to help exterminate the monsters in exchange for a commission of the drill's profit. After a small discussion, they agree to her terms and proceed to get rid of the monsters. Following the plant extermination, Cid and Luso are busy trying to find the alraune drill while Adelle bids the two farewell... with the lost drill in hand. She teleports away after saying her thanks and leaving the two flabbergasted. Luso and Cid deliver the stalk to Ribs and they have a small talk regarding clans and judges, and the seeq suggests that the court magicker who created the first spells, Lezaford, is still alive. They ask where to locate the high mage, but when they suddenly see Adelle in the same city, they ask for information about her instead. Ribs tells them about a request to take down a particular monster and the large amount of money being offered for its eradication, and hints that Adelle may be headed to the pub to take on the quest. This prompts Luso and Cid to put the wizard search on hold and they head to the pub to accept the quest.
They arrive at the Sun-dappled Trail and engage Ugohr and the monsters residing the forest, while being wary of Adelle who they believe is concealing her presence. After they defeat their mark, they leave the forest and Adelle suddenly makes her appearance, mocking the two for leaving the real treasure that is in the monster. She scouts the surrounding a bit and advances toward the fallen beast but was abruptly stopped in her tracks. Luso and Cid immediately return to the scene to ridicule the girl who was caught in their trap and attempt to get the alraune drill back, but she reveals she already sold it and spent all the gil she profited from it. Unable to comprehend her actions, they leave the forest and the trapped girl for good. They return to the pub and have a discussion about halting their wild mage chase, but Cid mentions of an old friend in Graszton who might know something substantial about Lezaford. Meanwhile, Adelle once again gatecrashes into the conversation and at the same time decides to join Clan Gully.
One night, a lone Cid visits the town of Graszton and speaks with an unseen figure regarding some sort of information. Just as he was about to leave, he is ambushed and shot by an assassin which left him unconscious. He is somehow rescued but his injury left him recuperating in bed. Luso blames himself for deciding not to accompany Cid while Adelle asks about their leader's condition. Cid awakens for a moment, to Luso's relief, and shares knowledge that the high mage Lezaford resides in the Aldanna Range and implores the boy to find him, before falling back to slumber. Hesitant about leaving his mentor in his current state, Luso and Adelle head to the Aldanna Range to clean up some monsters and to search for a wizard. Luso immediately notices the thick fog that envelopes the mountains and Adelle tells him that it is called "Mist" and that it is the root of magick throughout Ivalice. After checking his companion's condition, Luso notices monsters lurking about and discerns the distinct difference in their appearance from the monsters they've seen so far. Adelle responds that it is the dense amount of Mist that affected the monsters. She asks Luso if he would like to retreat but the boy is determined to see the quest through, even without Cid. Following their successful extermination of Gilmunto, Adelle attempts to scavenge the mark for any loot that could be sold, but she is halted by a stranger who told them the Mist bound inside the monster was about to let loose. She thanks him for the warning, but is returned with gratitude instead for their dispatch of the monsters. When asked by Luso whether he knew someone by the name of Lezaford, the old man introduces himself as the very man they seek and he invites them to his cottage. There, Lezaford learns of Luso's story and gives him the advice that it is possible to return to his world simply by filling the missing pages of the journal. Luso makes his way to Graszton upon hearing the mage's suggestion, while Lezaford quietly inquires about Adelle. But before they could proceed with their conversation, an impatient Luso calls to Adelle and she offers her farewell to the mage. They returned to Graszton to visit Cid and told him about what they talked to the mage about. Luso starts thinking of quests he'd like to take and places he'd like to go to to further the progress of the journal, but Adelle suggests bidding in an auction to help with quests instead. Cid and Adelle explain the working and benefits of bidding in auctions to Luso, and they decide to head to the pub to take on a quest promising an abundant amount of clan points while Cid continues to rest in bed. Before leaving, Luso suddenly asks Cid why he decided to help him. The man awkwardly admitted that he took a liking to Luso because he saw him as the ideal son since the day they met. Luso says his thanks to Cid then departs in high spirits.
Luso and the clan successfully prevent a forest fire from occurring in Zedlei Forest and they then decide to head to town to visit the auction house. There, Luso joins his first clan auction and instantly enjoys it. Adelle suggests taking part in another auction or a pub quest but Luso says he wants to visit some place where he can find lavenicalia flowers, so he can make a medicine for Cid. Adelle is as clueless as Luso as to where to locate the flowers but thinks of using pearl moss for a medicine that's just as effective, so she offers her help to Luso in making medicine in exchange for helping Adelle get pearls. Luso finds Adelle's request ludicrous at first but after hearing her explanation that the moss and the pearls are both in the same place, he reluctantly accepts her help and they head to the pub to accept a pearl-hunting quest.

Abilities

Each job has a set of abilities which can be used during battle. A unit can use abilities it has mastered in one job even after changing to a new job. However, in order to use the abilities mastered in a different job, a unit must first ready that job's set of abilities. Inexperienced units will only be able to ready the Items ability set. After trying several jobs and mastering some abilities, a unit will soon have a broad range of skills from which to choose.

Action

Choosing a set of abilities that complements the unit's main job can drastically improve the unit's usefulness in battle.

  • Items - Consumables such as potions and antidotes.
  • Arts of War - Soldiers and Warriors use these skills to weaken foes' defenses.
  • Black Magick - The elemental magicks of the Black Mage strike with the power of fire and ice.
  • White Magick - White Mages work these magicks to heal and restore their allies.
  • Precision - The skill of the Archer do not call for brute force, but deadly accuracy to fell a foe.
  • Thievery - The Thief uses this shadowy craft to make the possessions of others their own.
  • Calling - The Animist uses the abilities of the beasts of the wild.
  • Discipline - The abilities of the White Monk turn the body itself into a powerful weapon.
  • Fencing - The Fencer fights with attacks that pierce even the hardest steel.
  • Green Magick - The magicks of the Green Mage lend strength and succor to her allies.
  • Intercession - Bishops chant these sacred prayers to sway battle in their favor.

Reaction

Reaction abilities are triggered in response to enemy attacks. With a reaction ability readied, even your enemy's attacks can work in your favor!

  • Counter - Counter attack when targeted with an offensive action.
  • Archer's Bane - Avoid all bow-based basic attacks.
  • Bonecrusher
  • Critical: Berserk - Gain berserk when user becomes HP Critical.

Passive

Passive abilities enhance a unit's attributes or enable them to use equipment they wouldn't otherwise be able to equip.

  • Shieldbearer (150 AP) - Enables the user to equip shields, regardless of their current job.
  • Turbo MP
  • Safeguard - Prevents the user's weapon from being stolen or destroyed.
  • Geomancy - Lowers resistance to the user's elemental attacks. (Absorb → Immune → Half → Normal → Weak)
  • Spellbound - Extends the duration of buffs and debuffs on the user.
