Final Fantasy XII
Vaan is introduced as a young orphan living on the streets of Rabanastre. His brother, Reks, was killed two years prior in Dalmasca's war with Archadia. The Archadian Empire spreads word that Basch fon Ronsenburg killed both Reks and King Raminas. After the loss of his brother, Vaan began living with Penelo and her family, until the death of her family. Vaan and Penelo began living in Lowtown, where Vaan trains by fighting rats in the Garamsythe Waterway.Soon after Vayne Solidor is made consul of Dalmasca in the name of Archadia, Vaan decides to break into the Royal Palace and steal something in the name of Dalmasca. Upon sneaking into the Palace's treasury, Vaan finds the Goddess Magicite. Sky pirates Balthier and Fran arrive on scene, demanding the stone for themselves. Meanwhile, an attack on the palace ensues and amid the chaos, Vaan, Balthier, and Fran manage to escape to the Garamsythe Waterway. They encounter a Resistance member named Amalia who joins their ranks, but the group is eventually captured and sent to the Nalbina Dungeons.
After a battle in the dungeons, Fran finds an escape path. On the way out, the trio encounters a caged Basch who requests that they free him. Vaan angrily shouts at Basch, refusing to help him, but Fran drops the cage in order to flee. In the Barheim Passage, Basch claims that his twin brother, Judge Gabranth, was actually the culprit that slayed the king and Vaan's brother, Reks. Vaan doesn't believe his story, however, and angrily attempts to fight Basch only to be stopped by Balthier.
When the group reaches Rabanastre, they disband and Vaan visits Dalan in Lowtown. Dalan gives Vaan a special sword to deliver to the Resistance member and former Dalmascan knight, Vossler. Upon finding Vossler, Vaan overhears him insulting Reks. Vaan defends his brother's honor, backed up by Basch. Shortly after, Basch and Vaan make amends and meet up with Balthier and Fran. Local proprieter, Migelo, informs the group that Penelo has been kidnapped by Ba'Gamnan. The party then boards Balthier’s airship, the Strahl, and heads to Bhujerba to retrieve her.
In Bhujerba, they meet a young boy who introduces himself as Lamont, and decides to accompany them to the Lhusu Mines. In the mines, they discover magicite and fight Ba'Gamnan and his crew. Outside the mines, Lamont reveals himself to be Larsa Solidor, younger brother to Vayne. Larsa finds Penelo safe and takes her into his company after the others are captured by Archadian authorities. Aboard the Leviathan, the group is reunited with Amalia, who is revealed to be Princess Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca of Dalmasca, thought to have been killed in the war, and with Penelo. Ashe requests that the troupe of sky pirates kidnap her and fight to end the Archadian hold on Dalmasca. The group, now fully established, escapes the airship with little struggle.
Along the adventure, the group tracks down the shards of the Sun-Cryst, which will prove Ashe's birthright as the princess of Dalmasca. Upon traveling to the Tomb of Raithwall, the group obtains the Esper, Belias and the Dawn Shard. The Dawn Shard, however, is taken shortly thereafter by Judge Ghis, and destroyed in his attempts to test its power. The party continues its quest to restore Dalmasca and release it from Archadian influence. In the end, Vaan fights alongside his comrades to stop Vayne in his endless quest for power, defeating him. After the fall of the Bahamut sky fortress, Vaan takes control of the Strahl. However, Balthier reclaims the airship, and Vaan becomes the captain of his own airship, the Galbana (in honor of his brother), along with Penelo.
