Although an optional character, Vincent will provide some of the history surrounding Sephiroth’s birth. His story also helps create connections between characters and events.
Vincent is discovered slumbering inside a coffin in the Shinra Mansion’s basement. When Cloud indicates they are searching for Sephiroth, Vincent mentions his past sins and returns to sleep. When the party starts to leave, Vincent asks if he will meet Hojo on the journey and Cloud indicates that they probably will. Vincent then agrees to join the party.
Should the player visit the Crystal Cave with Vincent in the party, they will find Lucrecia Crescent encased in mako. Lucrecia will be confirmed as Sephiroth’s biological mother. In flashbacks, Vincent can be seen arguing with Hojo, getting shot, and being a specimen in experimentation, resulting in his Limit Breaks. When Lucrecia, who had visions of her son’s violence, asks if Sephiroth is dead, Vincent falsely tells her that he is.
If Vincent is in the party when the player approaches Hojo on the Sister Ray, Vincent will become enraged at Hojo, who insinuates that Sephiroth is his son.
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
If the player enters the side room of the Shinra Mansion basement, Zack will hear snoring coming from a coffin. He is surprised to see someone sleeping in there, although the player does not get the same visual. Seeing as this is the same location Cloud finds Vincent in the original game, the player is meant to conclude that the slumbering man is Vincent Valentine.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
During Cloud’s fight with Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo at the Forgotten City, Vincent rushes in, taking on the form of his cape, to retrieve Cloud and take him to safety. Vincent indicates that he also found and rescued Tseng and Elena who were brutally tortured. He teaches Cloud about Geostigma and suggests that Sephiroth could be recreated.
Vincent shows up later in Edge to aid in the battle against Bahamut SIN. He informs the rest of the party later that Kadaj is a Remnant of Sephiroth and suggests they allow Cloud to face the battle alone.
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
In the opening scene of the game, Vincent and Yuffie Kisaragi are seen aiding in the evacuation of Midgar just before Meteorfall (retconning their absence in the final FMV of the original game). Vincent makes his way up the Sister Ray to find Hojo’s body still there. However, after a bolt of lightning strikes the cannon, Hojo’s body disappears.
While awaiting a meeting with Reeve Tuesti in Kalm, the town is attacked by Deepground soldiers, forcing Vincent to step in and fight. Later, Reeve informs Vincent of some the details of Deepground and seeks his aid. Vincent soon learns that Deepground is searching for the Protomateria, knowing that it is in Vincent’s possession. However, Vincent is unaware of the fact that his body houses the Protomateria until Rosso extracts it from his chest.
Through various flashbacks throughout the game, the player learns that Vincent was once a Turk assigned to be Lucrecia’s bodyguard. It is suggested that during this time, the two became romantically involved. However, when Vincent discovered that Lucrecia had worked with his father, Grimoire, Lucrecia’s guilt over his father’s death drove her into the arms of Hojo.
After Lucrecia became pregnant, she and Hojo used the unborn child in the Jenova Project. When Vincent confronted Hojo on the matter, Hojo shot him and used his body in experimentation. Hojo would eventually discard Vincent as a failed experiment. Lucrecia then used her Chaos theory in an attempt to save Vincent, but it instead turned him into an uncontrollable demon. She then infused him with the Protomateria to help him control it. Shortly after, Lucrecia would hide herself away in the Crystal Cave. Vincent, being overwhelmed by his “sins”, would then lock himself inside the coffin in Shinra Mansion where he would remain for nearly thirty years.
Upon finding Weiss, Vincent learns that Hojo has taken over Weiss’ mind. Hojo explains that he projected his mind into the Worldwide Network, awaiting the opportunity to seize a weak mind. Vincent finally is able to defeat Hojo while being able to control Chaos without the Protomateria.
Shortly after Omega’s appearance, Vincent transforms into Chaos, using his unique power to infiltrate the WEAPON. Inside, he faces and defeats Weiss once more. When Omega begins its ascent, Vincent collides with it, defeating it. Vincent’s whereabouts, however, becomes unknown, and it is indicated that Cloud has gone out searching for him. The party eventually coaxes Shelke into searching for him. Shelke finds Vincent at the Crystal Cave, where he has finally forgiven himself for his sins.
